is there a easy way to tell if a marine motor is  a reverse rotation motor without tearing into the engine? I found one complete guy is asking $500

Do marine engines counter rotate as opposed to auto engines? 'I've never heard of this.

Only when there are two in the same boat. If both turn the same, it makes the boat hard to control.

learn something new. so if it was part of a pair, then you would have to find out which one you have. i would look at the plug wires to see what the firing order is. that should tell you what way it rotates.

I would think if it could be rotated by hand, you could cap the exhaust collector tightly with your hand and rotate it (in the proper direction) and feel for pressure.   There should only be positive pressure out of the exhaust if the motor is turning in the correct direction.

I believe you could look at the intermediat shaft gear under the distrebutor and see what direction the gear loads to.

You should be able to just look at the prop.

Not all are reverse.  If the starter is on it hit it with 12 volts.   Some starters are behind the flywheel, this means it's reverse rotation.
