California blue licence plate question

For the blue Cali plates, are the fornt and rear different?  Is there like a section in one corner on the rear that has a raised lip to effectively create a little rectangle for the registration sticker?

Plates are identical
Both have a rectangular indentations for the month and year stickers.

Also the blue and yellow plates were the first ones offered that you could get personalized plates.

No difference, yes a lip in both corners, more like an indentation. I got two vehicles still with blue plates.

For current year 2012-2013:

On the right is the year of registration sticker (it's orange color for 2013, and it changes with each 12 month renewal (non-calender year)).

On the left is the permanent sticker indicating month of expiration (it's white and blue and never changes except for ownership change or non-op).

Key question: what was the month and year of the DMCL, because that will dictate the revolving color code of the sticker. Did they have a monthly sticker then?

Even more inportant: wouldn't DMCL be unregistered? They were outlaws after all.

1976, year round registration started which required a month expiration sticker affixed to the upper left hand corner of the plate

So they would only have the year of registration in the upper right then.  Since the movie came out in 74 we can imagine that it was a 1975 expiry I suppose.

Hope this goes through I would love to see more black plate cars on the road. My '68 still has it's original black plates that it was bought new with from 1968

Before they started the month sticker you would put your year sticker in the left box of the plate. What most people did was put the next year sticker in the right box then the next year in the left box and so on.

When they started issuing by year and month then the month would go in the left and the year in the right.

If you are trying to make a movie car then I would go with a 74 sticker in the left box and get the metal tags for hanging your current month and year stickers.

Since movies take time to edit and release to the theaters its more than likely to have a 74 tag. Also you can tell people that's the year the movie was released.

Oh I see now.  Where I'm at the year sticker will be for the year the current one expires, that is, the next year.

Hmmm my 74 still has blue plates. they're all faded and bent tho. I've debated whether if and when I get back on the road I'll keep the blue ones or get personalized plates. I actually did order DTHTR4P a few months ago, but it got denied, ostensibly because of the 4 (some one already has DTHTRAP and they may get confused, blah blah).
