Trunk Replacement

The trunk in the charger is mostly surface rust, but there are some finger sized areas that are rusted through & some pinholes.  I usually do everything 1/2ass but want to do this one right.  Looks like the 2 piece trunk replacement is around $200.  I can't weld, so I will have to farm this one out.  How much should this cost me to cut out & replace?  I need to go get estimates from the local bodyshops.

Also, the rear window frame has a few spots of rust on the bottom & will need to be rebuilt.  Other than that, the car looks to be rust free...

Thanks.

Check with your local body shops, but if you can do any of the removal of the old and save someone  some work. You would save your self some cash. But its not that hard to weld the floor in. it's mainly just plug welds.

How far down the rabbit hole do you wanna go? :)  If I was you, I would bust out the CLR or some gentle rust converter.  Have a good with that, and spray it with a top coat (primer/paint).  AND LEAVE IT!

Trust me!  :)  If those small holes really bother you, I would go with some Durabuild or Alubuild or something that is waterproof, maybe even some seam sealer.

Once you open it up....   :popcrn:

Everything is rust free & good except the inside of the trunk and the rail around the rear window, I will have to have that rebuilt for sure.

Even if there are only a couple holes there will be lots of pitts to fix. If the rest of it is rust free if you can fit the 1 piece AMD trunk floor its the only AMD piece that fits like a glove. $399 well spent. By the time you figure patching and fixing the pitts why not change it.

Yes it would be well spent, dealing with rust is a pain in the ass. If you can use new metal. :2thumbs:

Always replace rusty metal with new metal.  This is like the First Commandment of the restoration game.  Trunks are a pain but need to be done and done correctly as they anchor all the rear sheetmetal.  Both the one and two piece trunks work well depending on what else needs to be done.
