Anyone have a suggestion on how to remove the body side decals without affecting the paint underneath? I'm looking to respray the car but I don't want to strip it down to metal since the original paint is still in solid shape.

Thanks.

Heat gun to help you peel the decals, then lacquer thinner to remove the glue. if they're original 1973 don't expect it to go smoothly though.

Unfortunately, I believe they are original. I thought I had read somewhere about using some type of rubberized stripping wheel that would take off the decal but not the paint underneath. Probably too good to be true anyway.

Actually it is true and works great!

It looks like a sold rubber disc and will disintegrate the decal without touching the paint but be careful not to stay in one spot or the paint may get too hot.

Try the heat gun (or hair dryer) first, if it works then you can save the money for the disc.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

I have an eraser disc but it hasn't worked for me. It may work on the factory decals though. (I remove lettering and decals at work all the time, not usually stuff from 73 though).

Check with a local body shop supplier,3m makes (or made-it's been awhile)
a aerosol decal and stripe remover.
