My front 4x4 differential broke like that and I had to have a old fashion tow truck pick the front end up and get me off the road. It sucks.

The worst part is the rear end locked up tight so the car had to be towed and dropped off in front of my friends duplex and there it's sat for the past two weeks because I haven't had the time to go pull the diff and then rent a trailer to go get it. :(

It looks like part of the cross pin broke off and got jammed in between the pinion and the ring gear. Age and fatigue are probably to blame, but the crusty residue on the carrier caps make it seem like the fluid wasn't changed very often.
