I took my Grandson to a small local show yesterday just for the experience.  I don't need any more $10.00 plastic trophies littering up my shop, but the Grandson was really into it and wanted me to win.  It was a judged shoe, so I thought there would be a good chance of me winning in the '62 to '72 muscle car class.  There were classes for street rods, pickups and all the rest.  The judges put you in whatever class that they deemed appropriate.  When they were giving out the trophies for the '62 to '72 muscle cars, I was awarded 2nd place and was happy to get it.  Then the gal said that we may be a little "miffed" by this and proceeded to award 1st place to '78 El Camino!  WTF?  I didn't really have a good explanation for my Grandson and didn't really care that much.  Then the ten year old boy walked up to the judges stand and proceeded to reem them a new asshole.  "That car is a pickup! Not a muscle car, and on top of that, it's a 1978!!!  You people are crazy!!!!!!"  I couldn't contain my laughter and took him back to the car and drove home...

Gotta watch those trophy hunters. They come out when you least expect it. This is how I do it.

Had one try this in person at a show, next time, I was prepared. Went to the local trophy shop and bought a couple of those little $5.00 Tophies. When One went off about how it is rigged and what not, I tried to hand him one saying sorry guy.

Shoulda seen the croud after that.

I keep a few in the trunk for this very reason now.

:smilielol: do you get them engraved? Worlds best complainer? Sore looser award?

Without the background of your first post in this thread, I'd would have no idea what was going on based on the info in the LX thread.

So was it your grandson that went up and reamed them a new one?

Was there a catagory post 72 that the El Camino should have been in?
I'm guessing not and the judges figured that was the closest catagory to put it in.

The car shows that are just pre 73-74 exclude some nice mid to late 70s cars and the promoters really need to start figuring out a way to include them.

I agree but as long as there was no category to place that '78 in, it should not have been judged in the first place.  It's not right to lose to a car that's not in your class.  The organizers messed up.  I wonder how the El Camino owner felt.  I wouldn't feel good knowing I received a trophy that should've been someone else's.

Yes, it was my grandson..  Feisty little fart.  As for the catagories, there was a pickup class and that is where I usually see El Caminos put.  But, there was also a "street" class that had no year cut-off.  I think the guy was a member of the club putting on the show, so probably just the typical small town show "buddy" stuff....

I'll say it until I'm blue in the face.

Any respectable car club will have it's member's cars' all in a class, (a host class is what we call it).

mauve66

back in the midwest the host club wouldn't even have their cars judged, they would be in a section all of their own with signs stating that fact

I have been in shows where the clubs cars were judged with everyone elses however the judges were not members of the club and didn't know the members or their cars. Supposedly.

This show I was at, it was judged by the participants. Every car had an envelope on the windshield and at registration they gave you a sheet of paper with number tags on it. So if you liked say the black '71 Challenger R/T in class 23, you would rip off the 23 tag and put it in the envelope of that Challenger.

I'm a member of the Capital City Mopars car club in Sacramento. At our annual show, the judging is performed by club members. We are not professionals, just car enthusiasts. Our clubs members are a bit more knowledgeable than average.  Our club members cars are in the show for display only and are not included in the judging for trophies. As judges, we look for general cleanliness and quality of workmanship. Each judge has their own tastes and preferences. Personally, I try to remove my opinions of colors or body styles that I don't like. I do not like the 63-66 A bodies, but if I see one that is nicely done, I grade it above a worn out 340 Duster. A judge with integrity will do the same. I have awarded trophies to MANY cars that I would never want to own. The judges need to be impartial.
Participant judging? I see it as a lazy move by the hosting club. There are more amateurs with show cars than car club members. You can't judge a car because it is "Pretty". Judges need to look closer at each car. I have seen a few..."Vote for mine, I'll vote for yours" at shows with participant judging. A Charger owner may not know or care about the Imperials, Furys, Aspens or trucks at the show and just mark a winner without even looking at the cars.
Another option is to have a professional group judge the cars. This is very expensive but is the best shot at fair and impartial judging.

Finally, with all due respect to the people who cherish these sorts of cars, why does someone who owns a cookie cutter car with 56" rims think they deserve to win anything?  What were the terms of the contest?

There's a stock Magnum class?

Yes. You'll find at most Mopar shows nowadays, there are classes for the LX cars. This particular show had classes for stock and modified Magnums, Chargers, Challengers & 300s....all split up into their appropriate model classes. Some people love them (like me) just as much as we love our classic Mopars. I went drag racing with my Magnum last night and my best was a 14.43 @ 96.79mph. Not bad for a stock 5.7L Hemi.

myk -

I've mentioned this before in the 4 Door Charger Hate threads, but just because these cars are new(ish) doesn't mean that they're "cookie cutter". Some of those guys put a ton of work into their cars, both cosmetic and performance wise. It's true that some guys just throw on big wheels and a sound system and act like theyre driving a Duesenberg BUT the guys that are serious about it know what theyre doing. Of course, there's always the "more money than taste" crowd.

That being said, I've judged both the LX and new Challenger classes at my car club's Spring Fling show. I think having a "stock" category for new cars is pointless. When I first got involved in judging, we still had separate categories for "stock" and "modified" LX's and Challengers. However, we got rid of the "stock" class in both the LX and Challenger classes.

No knock on you Cody, but my personal view of that is that there's really not much merit to having a bone stock car that you just drove off the lot (and I've seen those at shows, with dealer plates and temp registrations still on them). At least not in a show setting. It's not like it's a stock survivor 71 Demon or something. Maybe in 15-20 years having a stock 2010 Chrysler 300C may mean something, but right now it simply doesn't. How do you even judge that? "Oh...this one only has 300 miles, that one has 307" .That's why when I'm judging, I look at all cars, but I can pretty much tell you that unless you've invested time and effort into modifying your car (paint, interior, wheels, engine, suspension) etc, you're more than likely not going to be in the running.

Good job Cody. Those of us who have actually seen you at a car show know exactly how crazy you are about seeing, learning and taking pictures of everything.. You did good standing up for yourself and not pushing it too much at the same time. Don't let her shit bother you. Even if someone does read her crap and meets you in or at a show, they will quickly think, (THAT WOMAN IS NUTS)!!!! Just keep being you Cody. You are on the right track...  :2thumbs:
