Mopar Crazy

I put a set of new SS springs in my 68 Charger. New forward hangers and rear shackles..  Everything looks and fits good.
BUT,  I noticed  the right rear shackle is angled forward and the leaf and the shackle are touching the frame.  The measurment of the rear is equal on both sides. Eveything appears to be stright.
Can't understand this.....  :shruggy:    Anyone have any ideas?????

Thanks

I'm guessing your springs are too short..........not meant to be for a charger.  :Twocents:

Tomorrow is promised to no one.......drive your Charger today.

They measure 60 inches.  Not sure what the proper length should be on SS...  I found the receipt Here's the part #'s.

SS Spring right : P4452982
                left :  P445283

Hangers:      P4120079

Shckl Pack:   P5249716

Found this on jegs.com:

Rear Spring Front Hanger Bracket Sets
These straight hangers are 2" longer for use with Super Stock springs.

Offset Rear Spring Front hanger Bracket Sets
Offset Bracket Sets move the springs next to the frame. Requires spring seat and offset shackles to be moved, Offers the maximum possible movement inboard for tire clearance without frame rework.

Maybe you need offset hangers?  :shruggy:

I do have the 2" longer front hangers. I don't have an off set set-up. I double checked the part #'s. They seem to be correct. Can't see any reason for the rear right shckl to be angled up against the frame.
This is def gonna be a pain in the ass issue.

Part #4120078 are the offset hangers.  One digit difference.   http://www.summitracing.com/parts/DCC-4120078/

I wonder if that would fix it.  Can you post some pics?

Seen this before  :yesnod:

Get the car on the ground with weight on the rear suspension and grab a pry bar. Place the prybar between the frame and spring eye and pry the spring down. Careful as it will "snap" when it moves into the proper position.

The shackle should be vertical or facing slightly to towards the rear bumper when it's in the proper position. Make sure that the shackle bolts are not overtightened and allow for some free movement.  ;)

The more I work on my car, the more I realize that having a pry bar in your tool box is not a luxury.   :icon_smile_big:

Ditto. I've had it happen on two different sets of SS packs. When you install everything up off the ground, the extereme arch of the SS design creates a shorter effective length to the spring which will pull the shackle forward when unloaded. Put it on a jack and slower lower until the tires start to touch the ground, then use the pry bar to flip the shackle back, drop the car the rest of the way, everything will be good.

Great help here, Thanks....
I'm gonna try this when I get home Saturday,
FF:: should I jack the car up from the frame or the rear ? and basically I'm just taking some weight off the spring ??

Dino, For some reason I'm having problems posting pic's...

Thanks

Yes jack the car up from the frame just to take some weight off the spring

FYI the spring part # you listed are extra heavy duty not ss springs. I would do what Firefighter suggested. That's the way I assembled my SS springs. The part # for SS springs are 3690454 and 3690455 for 3800 lb. B body.

If you dont have the ss springs you dont need the 2" longer front hangers. The ss springs are shorter in the front length thats why you have the longer hangers.

Glad to hear it worked Pete  :2thumbs:

If the springs you installed are not the SS springs then there might be an issue with the wheel location. A quick way to check is to measure from the front spring eye to the pin (referred to as the front segment). Foe a SS type front hanger you need 20inches. The front segment is 2in shorter than a stock spring which is why they sell the 2in longer front hangers.  :yesnod: The shorter segment is partially what makes them stiffer.

Using a stock spec (22in front segment) spring with the SS Hangers will move the differential back 2 inches and not center the wheel in the wheelwell.

See if you can post up some underside pics as well as some side shots of the car so we can see what it looks like.  :scope:

Update: More good news.  The part numbers I previously posted ( P4452983 / 3) were the part numbers on the receipt. Now FF had me thinking, I looked under the spring and found P3690454 / 5 stamped in white.
I also measured from the front spring eye to the center pin at 20"  inches. and center pin to the rear spring eye 36".

At the time I did order SS, and I remember he said that he gave me a discount. Looks like he charged me for a less expensive part.

Thanks to all that helped with this thread !!!

Great news Pete !  :icon_smile_big: That had to be a relief seeing the 454/455 markings along with the 20in front segment measurement  :ricky: Had you installed the factory length springs it would have been obvious just looking at the car from the side.  :yesnod:

FWIW, the SS front hangers can be used with a stock spring....you just have to drill new holes 2in forward on the hanger in order to maintain proper positioning of the differential.
