 happy new years guys, still going strong on saving up for my slow resto on the daytona, i can honestly say ive saved 12k this year ,which is ok ..considering i purchased a 2003 cobra and fixed my house a bit,any how im looking to save about another 13-18k before i start the resto, ive made my mind up about no more mustangs and totally devoting any extra cash to the pot of savings, ive got a beginners plan ,for my resto..1.freshen up the 50k motor with new gaskets, seals and bearings and freashen up auto trans but no mods, 2.paint underside, enginebay EVERYTHING ,3. would be suspension and 4. interior...hoping to do the paint and motor/trans at the same time ,im taking the motor to daves machine(mopars enines west) still looking for a trust worthy paint shop that will do an excellent job...

NOW since ive been working on mustangs i always recieve catalogs like 50resto and mustangs unlimited which offer 100's and 100's of restoration parts for mustangs of any year, now i know most of you restore chargers(mopars) can anyone tell me what catalogs i can order or sign up for, for oem or original parts for daytonas or chargers in general,id like to start looking into these catalogs ,i know of year one but i can always use some guidence and i dont mind asking for help, thanks in advance

DAY CLONA

If your serious about your restoration, go about it in the proper order, determine how the build will be: stock OEM, restomod, custom?....either way, you need a place for the car, and the parts, document what you take apart for future assy, mark and store all parts, if you can leave assys together until your ready to tackle them, do so, IMHO the body is your biggest project getting it painted, sorry but your plan of rebuilding the driveline and painting the engine compartment and undercarriage are just wasted time and money, unless the body and paint are survivor status? and need no attention other than detailing?

If the body requires a full restoration, and your unable to perform the work, and you'll be relying on bodyshops, time and money go hand in hand as to how long it will take, and how much it will costs, California shop rates can be high, as can any high end shop anywhere in the country, the $12K you have saved covers just a quality paint job, a full resto?, all depends on your cars condition, the build level you expect, the shop used, etc, etc, etc, a lot of guys fall prey to this moneypit, what starts out as a $20K body resto, turns into $40K, then $60K, then,?...

Even with a clean car, 90+% of the parts on hand, and watching your $$$$$$, a "cheap" resto relying on others to perform the work, you better have upwards of $75K to get the car done completely, again too many variables can easily double that fiqure

unless your prepared to restore the car properly, don't start a teardown, as an ill attempt at spot resto work will be dated and aged by the time you complete the car, IMHO the body should be completed/finished in paint, then you can concentrate on assembling the interior, wiring, glass, detaling, etc as the driveline is being rebuilt, this way by the time your wrapping up the body assembly, the driveline will be freshly rebuilt, and will be the final assembly needed to complete the car, in other words, build the car in the order a factory built vehicle would be assembled, you wouldn't build a house starting with the roof, a car, like a house needs to start with a solid foundation, and progress forward, concentrate on having all the parts on hand needed, nothing stalls a project more than not having the part(s) to continue the flow of progess, esp when others are performing the work.......

i hear you clear as daylight,i plan on saving for the next couple years i do understand its going to take about 50-75k,i want to paint it first and get the body done, foundation is solid been garaged since the 80's no rust, and im glad we agreed on the paint/body first the only reason i want to tackle the motor and trans 2nd is because it hasnt been turned on since the 80's ,just want to get it running not looking for anything other than complete stock oem resto to original ,so the car keeps its true value,i know this wont be an over night thing im only 26 and i know patience is key ,saving money is the issue, so i plan on saving for 10 yrs . hopefully by then ill have 75k in the pot or atleast havethe paint and bodywork done

ohh,12k is nothing just what i saved this year, and i wouldnt even start considering the body and paint  until i have 30k saved, hoping to save another 10k this new year if god allows me,and hopefully every year after that at least 10k but economy sucks ,so i know its going to be tuff, hell i mite only save 5-7k for the next 10 yrs who knows, the point is know what my goal is and im patient

Mustangs are money pits cause you dump all the $$ in go fast parts and literaaly get $0.10 on a dollar for the go fast parts if you sell the car as is once done.

my last Gt i put in a HCI stroked 393W tremec TKO 5 speed and the works. Had about $15k in the driveline alone, sold the whole car for $11k. Got back less than 1/2 of what i had in it. Live and learn.

The notch I have now luckily i didn't get to doing any modifications. All the goodie parts are in the garage. Easy enough to sell after then if i would have installed them all.

I've learned unless its a muscle/classic car cars/trucks in general are a bad investment if you ever plan on reselling.

If i was smart I would have bought my brothers daytona back in the 90's on payment plan lol.

i heard that AND TOTALLY understand ,thing with me is i dont sell the stangs because you loose so much,i want to say i got about 15k into this coupe aswell 331 AFR185,CUSTOM CAM ,RPM2,tko, ,this was supposed to be a simple build ,which is why i decide it to call it quits n stangs,if i continue to use my motivation like i do on myponys and snakes i should have no problem getting this daytona done in 10 yrs, atleast i hope with gods permission

get it running and enjoy it as-is for a few years...it'll be welcomed anywhere in its present condition, and you'll love being in it again.
