Is A/C evaporator necessary.....

...if I'm converting the car to non-A/C?  I want to leave out the evaporator because the firewall will look so much better without the extra A/C stuff poking through.

I would like the heater and defrost to work, but I'm afraid if a leave out the evaporator, the air might not channel throught the box the way it should, as the different controls are selected and things open and close.

After thinking about it for a while:

Defrost: maybe the only thing that won't be quit right is when the defrost is on, there will still be a little air blowing through the little louvers on the bottom of the box.
Heat: should be OK, the big door will be open, as well as the little louvers on the bottom.
Fresh air:  should work the same with or without evaporator?
A/C:  no components, but the air should still blow through the dash vents according to the fan speed?   This one I'm not sure about.  Without the evaporator, I'm not sure yet what the air will do when A/C is selected. :shruggy:

Anybody else do this?

I have a plan....

A piece(s) of lightweight sheet metal (shaped like the panel portions of the actual evaporator) fastened into place should channel air as if the whole evaparator was in place.

I'll take pics of my creation and post it as part of my resto thread I'll be starting in the next few weeks.

After thinking about this, I believe the only way you make it work is addi n some sort of plate like you mentioned to fill the area where the evap was.
Otherwise i have my doubts the air flow would work right
