OK....heres the situation...I took the grill out of my 68 to "restore" it.  The center section is a mess with a bunch of old repairs that didnt hold together very well.  I found a nice replacement center section off of a member here....the problem is that was my money for the new steering box.  My car drives straight as an arrow,no play at all in the steering and turns fine so there are no real issues with the box other that it leaks all the fluid out every time I fill it up.  I know its the seals...I wanted to just replace it with a feel firm box.

I guess my question is how hard are the steering boxes to take out and rebuild/reseal?  What parts or is there a kit I can use to rebuild it that has the seals?  How many seals are there?

Thanks in advance.

I just replaced mine with one from Autozone best $97.00 I've spent!!!  You can buy a reseal kit from autozone or napa, not sure how difficult it is, but if you take it out and bring it over we can see what it takes!  The box itself is fairly easy to take out, hardest part is getting the stearing column off.

New one from AutoZone here too - I rebuilt the gear box on my brother's old 72 Nova and I said "never again" - then again I was 14 at the time - I just thought buying a replacement was easier. Not terribly difficult to rebuild - but why hassle with it.     Either way -  good luck!   :2thumbs:

PS the hardest part of removing it is not dropping it on your chest during removal.

WOW, only 97.00 bucks. That's a hell of a better deal than going through "firmfeel". Not to mention the shipping of the leaky pig. :Twocents:

Dave, here's some pics I did on my 70rr box.  Wasn't that hard if you want to try it yourself first.  Worst thing can happen is you end up buying the box you were thinking about doing anyway.  You may just find out when you look at it where its leaking its a simple and cheap fix without taking it out.

Here is pic of my car.  I just replaced: rear leaf springs, rear shocks, front inner and outer tie rod ends, power steering box, radiator, and transmission rebuilt.  Car feels brand new again!  Can't wait until the HotRod Power tour.
