Long story short- I've been laid off since April of this year. Just got a job offer in Danbury, CT. Need to get the skinny on the area as far as real estate, cost of living, where to avoid, etc... from those that would know such things. Anybody able to offer any advice??

Danbury is about 45 minutes from me & seems to be very typical as far as a suburban area within commuting distance of a large city like New York. My Aunt had a house there in the 70's & 80's before she relocated to Florida & had liked the area when she was there. Not sure what the current real estate prices would be, but Danbury seemed to be in the same range as Bergen County, NJ, & Rockland County, NY. Parts of CT near Danbury are so expensive you'd have to be a CEO of a large company to live there. There's also plenty of box stores, malls, highway access & shopping congestion.

Well, I was born there but have been away so long I'd be afraid to give you bad info.. Try checking out their Chamber of Commerce website as it should have allot of info on Population size, crime rate, tax rates, average rent,utilities... Hope that helps.

Hey, congrats on the offer!!! I would offer up my wife's commentary on Danbury but she lived there 21 yrs ago so it's probably not to relevant anymore.

I can tell you that I always bitch about the traffic when I drive through on I84.  :D

I can tell you never buy gas in CT.
On the bright side think about how much closer you are to Carlisle. I'm guessing we'll be hooking up at your place for Carlisle 2012 inside of fu*kin' Mike's

I also live 45mins away. Not sure what to tell you?  I fix elevators at the Danbury mall.  Never heard anything negative about it.  Kind of expensive to live here in Ct.  Yes I-84 can get backed up.  look for small towns further west is all I can say.  Beautiful state.
This car was sold many years ago to somebody in Wisconsin. I now am retired and living in Florida.

I have accepted the job in Danbury. The company has an outstanding relocation package; after doing a fair amount of on-line research, it appears I'll be able to find a decent house for similar money to what I have in NH. Cost of living will be a little higher, but not excessively so. I managed to find temporary housing there already as well. I'll probably wait until early summer to try to sell my place; gives me some time to organize and fix what needs fixing, and the market is pretty slow here now anyway. I'm looking forward to rejoining the workforce, and no longer being an economic statistic!

The loss is to the state of NH.

Good luck in CT.

WE should get together before you head south.

Thanks, Darryl. My plan is to be back in NH on the weekends, until the house sells anyway- not even planning on listing it until probably May, at the earliest. We definitely will need to get together- you, me & Brian need to do a cruise or two this spring!
