I have seen grilles all black, black with argent accents, and all argent.  At first I thought it was just guys painting their grilles but after checking out pics from the Welborn collection, I see some of his cars have completely black grilles also.  My cars grilles are black with no evidence of argent ever being present that I can see.  Was this an option?   :shruggy:

Spider,

I cannot say with absolute certainty  (never say never in the world of Ma Mopar), but every stock '71 R/T I ever saw with fixed headlamps was a combination of flat black, argent silver, and a dash of chrome.  I am 53 years old, so I also remember them from "back in the day".  Of course, I wasn't into the concours bit back then, either.

My younger son has a '71 SE, and I swapped him my fixed headlamp system for his hidden one.  He is researching to get everything correct on his; I'll ask him next time we visit.

By the way, I have been following your dedicated thread.  You are doing an outstanding job on yours, it is always nice to see the younger guys involved with vintage Mopar iron.

im pretty sure they didn't go "all black" till '72 where the semi-gloss black was part of the "ralley package." One thing to always keep in mind about these cars is they've had 40 years to be restored/molested/altered with varying levels of quality, might have been a very well done restore back in the 80's or 90's.

Thanks.

I swear I saw a pic of the Wellborn collection lined up and 2 of the cars had all black grilles.  Maybe it was the lighting?  :shruggy:   I can't imagine that The Wellborn Collection would have incorrect cars but  I guess that is a possibility also.   Exactly what was silver?  I've seen Just the edges, as well as the whole center.

If they had all black in 72 than I can sleep at night. Because I have looked my grilles over like a forensics expert and I am positive they never had silver on them and have not been painted.  Must be that they are from a 72.

I pretty sure that if they where delivered with urethane painted bumpers the grill was painted black...
at least was that was the conclusion I did in my research...

If you mean about hideaways, as far I remember color keyed bumpers were not an option with hideaways

That was my hypothesis.   I have only seen it with color keyed bumpers.  If I could only find some verification.
