4 speed overview new build

I'm getting ready to start a new build on a 31 reo rat rod project I'm starting to gather some parts to get everything mocked up of course I got to go with a 440 for the build was going to go with a t56 transmission but thinking it may be a bit overkill and expensive so I'm looking into running a 4 speed instead I'm not familiar with the mopar 4 speeds and there specs my question is can anyone list the different 4 speeds that bolt to the 440 and any info on strength design gear ratios things that will help me choose what one would suite my build  anyone know of a website that lists and explains each mopar 4 speed? I looked but didnt find Wat I was looking for

When it comes to 4-speeds the Mopar 833 is hard to beat for strength, especially the Hemi version. The 833 (and the one-year T-10) are the only readily available 4-speeds that bolt directly to the 440 but with the Quicktime housings just about anything can be made to fit. Jamie Passon has introduced a new killer 5-speed OD that directly replaces the 833, that's what I would be using if money allowed.

Thanks for the link I don't want to spend over 1000 for my trans I wad thinking a quicktime bellhousing and a t56 but it is overkill I think as I probably won't ever see 100mph in this rat rod build I have the keisler tko600 trans in my challenger and charger I'd really like to be around the $500 range so a 833 may be what I'm after

833 will be a great trans in just about any car - they are solid, easy to work on, and very nice to drive without much drama...         :2thumbs:

What type of clutch linkage and shift linkage do they have want to get some ideas on how to  set up the pedal and trans hump anyone got some pics of the setup in there car? I'm thinking if I can find a cuda 833 it would be a good gear ratio

what all engines will have the same big block bellhousing pattern as my 440 just the 383 400 and 440?  Found acouple locally but most are missing the bellhousing anyone convert to a hydraulic clutch system on there 833 also how hard is it to regasket them? need any special tools

To re-gasket them it is not hard - no special tools - to do a rebuild you'll need snap ring pliers and a press to push on the new bearings...        The linkage is external usually with a hurst competition shifter.

So a big block hemi bellhousing will bolt right up to the 440? I keep finding small block 833's is all that's needed is to get a big block bellhousing and swap it with the small blocks I didn't read anything about the small block 833 input shaft being any different then the big blocks am I correct

You are correct that a 23 spline trans will bolt up fine to big block with a bid block bellhousing. In fact, 23 spline 833 trans was the factory set up for 361/383/400 big block cars.

Ok thanks so as long as I get a matching big block bellhousing with the same size hole on the face of the bellhousing where the trans bolts to as the trans I'll be set? what size clutch and flywheel will I use in the 440

the flywheel choice will depend on the bellhousing - there are 11" and 10.5" versions - the 10.5" bellhousing requires a 130 tooth flywheel and the 11" requires a 143 tooth flywheel...      the clutch and pressure plate will be dependant on the flywheel....       long story short - find a 10.5" bellhousing, flywheel, and the 23 spline clutch set of your choice.     :2thumbs:

yes - as long as the bearing retainer diameter is the same as the bellhousing register bore you're good to go.

The 833 had two different input splines 18 & 23 , either will be very strong but the 18 is the HD application , the 833 has about 6 versions with different ratios , the later ones are alum case & use 3rd gear for OD , some like them others do not , they can be a bit weaker but I ran one in my race car for a decade & it broke 3 8 3/4 diffs but never hurt the OD trans , in a light weight rat rod you will not hurt an 833 .
I would recommend using a McLeod clutch , get the 11" [143 tooth flywheel] or 10.95 [[130 tooth flywheel]
