2nd gen dash design - why the "offset" gauges?

Something I´ve never understood - dash is cool, very functional and no sign of mustang "vanity"...

Still, why the speedo & tach/clock isn´t centered in front of steering column beats me!

The small gauges could have (and is "normally") come in 2nd priority in the design and taken whatever space is left after the 2 main gauges were decided on....

Anyone of the same opinion?

Looks a bit strange - but OK - key feature of interior - and I kind of like it - but still no logic (besides that the 4 small ones need the space on the right given that they are in one row)

Opinions?

I would go as far as to say "the coolest" dash ever made, It got good reviews when the cars were new as well.
