Are we hot-rodders or classic car restorers?  This subject brings up the difference.

Why couldn't you be both? There are more and more cars with modifications on them nowadays, that the true "restorations" are left to the folks with really fat wallets.

As was said, hot rodders used anything and everything available. Drag racers do the same to an extent. They try to get the most amount of horsepower as cheaply as possible. These engines are rebuilt completely after a couple of runs so why not use something readily available and cheaper

I personally wouldn't do it unless it was to achieve what I want with my build. The build I am doing is a cruiser/driver with attitude, and nothing shows more attitude than a big block Mopar.
Make it idiot proof, and somebody will make a better idiot!

street rodders are the worst  , they spend all that time and money on building flawless cars and then throw a cheapo 350 chevy motor in them .

I was drooling over these two beautyful chryslers and then  :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke: :puke:   when i saw the 350 motors in them both .

It occasionally goes the other way, big block mopar in a '60s ford truck was a popular swap back in the day. I've seen a 440 powered Malibu R/T.

This is the only photo of the Malibu I could find, Woodburn (Oregon) around 1981.

Its back but with no mention off the brand x power plant or any smart remarks.

Guess wonder dummy figured out he was ticking off 98.7% of the potential buyers.

He would be better off selling the powertrain separately then selling the car as a roller.

I had an FJ-40 Land-cruiser by Toyota in the 70's. Back then a common swap was to use a SB Chevy, making it a "Toy-let".  They make an adapter set to install SB Chevy into my Jeep Cherokee....I could NEVER do it. (Now a SB Mopar I am thinking of.... :scratchchin: )

There's a local with a '71 Duster and a crazy built SBC under the hood.. He gets to hit the track on Mopar Day AND Super Chevy Day.. He's got the best of both worlds

When asked why he went with a SBC... his response is always the same "Saved a TON of $$ and it's reliable"  , that wins the heart of fans every time.

I thought there was rule that anything before the 50s Had to have a small block chev in it  :nana:

I read an article somewhere about a '67-'68 Camaro with a 2JZ import 6 cylinder, turbo'd. Made something like 850 HP and was fairly reliable. When asked why, the gent replied: "It makes this kind of power all day long, gets 24 MPG highway, and it woulda taken alot more $$$ to get a 555 C.I. BBC where this one is."

it is what it is...    it was built to be cheap but he seems to think it's made of gold...         I dont personally care about cross breeding engines and cars - as long as it makes sense...     How many guys have put hemis into old model Ts ?  who complains then?    That isnt even a duster anymore IMO - its a tube frame, race interior, aftermarket this and that...     who really cares?    The owner is just some checy guy who wanted something different...

I'll put it this way -  if it is a caged car and uses engine plates to mount it - who cares what engine it is?

I have a Tremec trans behind me hemi...    it's from a O.E. Ford / GM application.    Guys who put 4L65Es from Keisler behind their big blocks say they are awesome...    so crossbreeding doesn't bother me unless it makes no sense.     :Twocents:

2013 Dodge Challenger R/T - 5.7L Hemi / 6-speed / 3.73 Limited Slip

1964 Dodge Polara 500 - 440 / 4-speed / 3.91 Sure Grip

1973 Dodge Challenger Rallye - 340 / A-518 / 3.23 Sure Grip

:hah: I don't care for cross breeds either... Even in the Street Rods I don't really care for all the SBC's in every 32 Ford type deal, but I do like seeing a Hemi in a Early Ford or what ever...LOL... Maybe because it's much more rare to see that combo... But now after saying that... To each their own, do what makes you happy, unless it's a rare car then don't do it at all... Here's a hybrid you may like, it's not mine...

What was that song by Bruce "The Boss" Springsteen? "Ram Rod"?

Lyrics went something like dis....

"She's a hot steppin' Hemi with a 4 on the floor"
"She's a roadrunner engine in a '32 Ford"..
"Well, late at n ight when I'm dead on the line"..
"I swear I think of your pretty face when I let her unwind"..

IT would seem that the newest "Bandwagon"/"Me too" Engine of choice just so happens to be a 5.7 Liter Hemi in every f*ckin' thing ever concieved.
5.7 SBC or 5.7 SBC(hrysler) Coincidence? I think not...

It always seemed you couldn't find the aftermarket part for mopars that you could find for the ovals and the bowties in the older days. The mopars for the most part were faster right outta the box. The aftermarket part manufactures were just trying to help the slower cars even up the score. You really didn't need a ton of money to whip there ass again in two or three weeks. All you had to do was go down to the dealership (dodge or plymouth) pick up the Direct Connection manual, now called mopar performance(written by Pentastar Engineers and part of the RamChargers racing team) go home read it , take your engine apart and hog out the heads and intake, like they show and say in the book, put it back together and whip their asses again. All on factory parts. My case in point, my Road Runner. It has different pistons, and an aftermarket intake, with a different carb, in and on the 440. Makes 750 hp at the rear wheels, and runs 9.20 consistantly. Not a lot of dough in it.   And no Bottle Baby, or trailer queen

:hah: I think this would look great in a street rod too... Preferably a 34 Plymouth...
