ok im finishing up the motor and should i run a 160, 180 or no t stat for the engine breakin? i got high flow versions of the 160 and 180. im using stealth heads too. i always ran a 160 high flow with my old iron heads on my 400. should i jump up to the 180 on the aluminum heads?

On breakin, I leave them out. I don't want that spike in temp on a brand new engine. ( it's a personal thing )

Chryco Psycho

spike in Temp ???
with the thermostat it will reach operating temp faster & the thermostat controls it from there

180* I like Tantop's idea of testing it first.  Some guys drill a tiny hole in the flat part to help bleed the air out.  :Twocents:

I broke mine in with the stat and just used a water hose to hose down the radiator to keep it cool

proper engine break in will be achieved faster with engine at operating temp....most rebuilders say do not leave the t-stat out...run a 180*

I heard an old dog trick is to drill a 1/4 inch hole in the flange. Not sure why but I don't argue with old dogs and did it on my 160 high flow.

Like , I said - MY preference and never had an issue yet in 20 plus years of doing it this way
I have always left it out, Bring it up to  temp slowly. and let her run. once its' got maybe and hours worth of run time on it. I'll put the stat in.

Too tight where?  Oil pump?, bushing?, or the gear?

Did you burnish the bushing?

the bushing is too tight. it was not burnished i believe it was just knocked in the block.
