Hard to believe its been 10 years since I lost some friends and brother firefighters in the attack on the World Trade Center.  Seems like only a couple years have passed.  Another friend of mine was supposed to work that day who switched with another FDNY rookie is luckily still with us but is having some difficulties with guilt as his entire company and squad from his firehouse was killed that day.  Guess it just wasn't his time but since then, he seems to be suffering mentally and emotionally from the psychological effects.  :rotz: RIP to all the people killed and prayers to all the effected families.  Keep their spirit alive by keeping them in our thoughts and memories!

Amen to every word you said and someone should be with your friend today and reassure him as this will be a time of trial for him. Sometimes our decisions never make sense to us and fate is what it is. Sometimes, it is just blind luck that we escape what seems to be a chosen fate but ...... there is a reason for it even though we may never know it.

I agree you cannot waste the rest of you life second guessing yourself , make the most of still being alive . There is no way anyone would know that the day they took off would save their life or jeopardize another life .
It is still a shame he lost his whole crew .

Neil,  my friend has made a ton of progress with how he is dealing with it.  He is still working FDNY so that has to say something.  I bet if he isnt working today, then he is down at Ground Zero or attending different memorials.  He actually was a key speaker at the one they held in our county last year or the year prior.  I gotta give my friend a ton of credit.  I don't know if I would be able to have dealt with all the stuff that he did.

I doubt anyone old enough to remember what happened that day will ever forget.  :'(

My uncle was a NYC fireman in Manhattan & retired during the summer of 2001. I've never talked to him about it, let alone ask about the other firefighters who died that day, but I'm sure he knew many of them.

I live on the west coast, but got rolling pretty early that day. I heard/watched the whole thing from the first plane hit until the 2nd tower came down. The emotions and thoughts that were running through my mind back then all came back this morning when I watched the History Channel run through the time line, and watching the FDNY hauling gear toward tower #1 when tower #2 had already come down. Those guys from FDNY, NYPD Port Authority, and all of the other agencies are true Heroes.

Danish tv has been showing several different segments about 9/11 all day.. I've seen a lot of them today, and it's just so amazing to see the dedication and courage of the people who rushed to help others in need..
Let's hope we never have to witness such cruel actions again...

Yeah 10 years already. Oh my gosh.
I was just about to hit the sack for the night when a small news flash scrolled across the TV screen.
Thinking it was a light aircraft that had gone astray I turned off the TV and headed to bed.
Turned on the clock radio to check the volume was set for the next morning's alarm and they were talking about it. That's when I realised there was something desperately wrong.
My wife and I sat up all night watching the events unfold before our eyes live on TV.
I'll never forget that night and how close we held each other while so many lives were being lost on the other side of the world.
Still brings a tear to my eye when I see some of the footage and I guess it always will.
Gotta love a '69

Glad the OP's friend is alright now and has found a way to deal with the guilt of not being there. I know we all have our "trials and tribulations" from time to time in our life. The times when it could have and, maybe, should have been you are hard to deal with and understand. I know I have had them as well as most others too. Stopped trying to figure them out long ago .

I was sitting in front of a high-altitude sector radar screen when the towers were hit. Got the order to clear all the airspace ASAP shortly thereafter and spent the rest of the day watching an empty radar screen looking hard for unidentified targets or watching the TV coverage. It was so heartwrenching seeing that !! Many, many of those people never had a chance !! SOOOO sad and I will NEVER FORGET.

God Bless them too. Memories all came back from that horrible day. Made sure my kids watched it so they'd remember or at least understand the reason why Daddy's gone to war a couple of times over at that Desert place..... Bad people and pure evil..........

PS: Awesome shots of the flag reflection..........   :2thumbs:
