Hey guys,

I'm gonna put approx. a 400 horse 383 in front of a keisler 5 speed in my 66 and I have a 741 8 3/4 right now with an open 2.94. I want to put a powertrax locker and 3.23's if I can find them (if not then 3.55). Do you think I'd be alright with the 741 :-\ or should I look for a 742/489 case. :drive: BTW what do you have to change, if anything to put a BB in a SB car?

Thanks for your help.

RD

741 is fine IMO.  its not the strength of the pinion that is the problem with breakage in most cases from what I have seen, its the carrier caps and ring gear.  I had a 741 in my 71 charger drag car for 2 years with no problem.

to put a BB in a SB car you need:

  • bb motor mounts
  • elongated coil lead wires
  • bigger radiator
  • and i am sure others will chime in

if you are getting a keisler 5 spd, i am sure you are getting a custom driveshaft along with it.  hope this helps.

You should have no trouble finding 3:23's and I wouldn't worry too much about breaking it.  The 741 gets a bad rap and it's still a plenty strong rearend.

my boss ran a 3.55 SG 741 behind a blown 440 and a 4-speed...    never had any problems...

The 741 unit will be plenty strong for you, but they don't sell 323 gears sets yet for the 741 or 742 case.
You will need to find a good used set, there are a lot out there so that will be easy.

Also, you will need to look at front and rear suspension and brake upgrades
