rust on sure grip unit

i purchased a sure grip unit and its just been sitting in its box in my garage and in my car, i just opened it to look at it and almost had a heart attack when i saw rust all over the outside of it...DID THIS RUIN MY DANA TRAK LOCK???

if it is just the iron case no , if the gears are rusted & pitted it will still work but May make some noise cornering , how bad is the rust ?

its just the iron case, the gears look perfect. the case has a thin layer of rust over the whole thing.
