Help with Decklid Oil Canning

Got some oil canning in the center of my decklid. Worked it for a while this weekend but didn't get the results I had hoped for.

Did some shrinking both with a torch and metal disk as described here:
http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,69192.0.html

The skin wants to "float" barely above the support panel, and I can't get enough tension to lay it down.

Any advice from the experts?  How have you guys dealt with this?

It's tempting to "join" the skin to the support panel...
that seems like cheating, but I need to stabilize the panel before doing any bodywork on there.

have you got a skeleton inner frame  or a complete double skin Deck lid

no pic, we're talking a rectangle maybe 14" x 20" in the center of the lid.

its difficult to really make a guess  with out actually seeing it or  more importantly  running the Palm of your hand over it to gauge exactly what it needs  ,   if  its is really F88888  , there are a few sleazy ways to sort it & then gallons of bondo , but would never entertain this way !   look for another deck lid ???

but if the high/strech just a little & going plink plink , get it as best you can  , with what ever like mentioned in the oil canning thread  ,  if there is any low spots around the said rectangle in the middle  , bondo it block it  , then skim the whole deck lid with  bondo  ,  then with a log block & 40 grit  flat the bondo any high spots come through , give them a tap down  ,  bondo them areas the re block ,  then skim the whole deck lid again with bondo ,block with 80 this time if you see any highs starting to  come through you need to be carefull when blocking make sure you arrive at a flat deck lid before you really brake through on any high spots , hard to explain with out actually doing it !!  give the whole lot a light blocking with 180  , then 4 or five coats of high build primer ,  block with a half sheet block 320 grit  wet  then reprime again & block again , re prime if nessary &  then wet flat / block normal way 600 -800 - or 1000 grit if metalic

I'd rather keep the original one to my car, it's in good shape otherwise.

I'm wondering if anyone has successfully spot welded the skin to the subframe.  Once it was pinned, it'd be fairly easy to pull tension/shrink against the spot welds and get the skin pretty straight and stable.  Problem is there's 40 years of surface corrosion between the panels.  IMO, this is better than trying to inject some sort of expanding goo between the panels.

I'm good with skimming and blocking it out, but there's no point in that until it is steady.

I'm assuming the problem area is too high, correct? Try doing smaller sections at the edges instead of the center of the problem area,I like using shrinking discs, because you have better control than with torch IMO,get it nice and hot and cool it right off with cold water of small bags of ice,It may take a few hours to get it right. :Twocents:

High at times I suppose...The problem is if you push on the panel it moves around like a loose drum skin.  So it needs to be shrunk.

That's the approach I'm using, just need more time and patience to get it right.  Also, been using an air gun to cool, time to step up to cold water.

i use a wet sponge or wet chamos leather   when cold shrinking(or even hot) go in spiraling  circles  out side to centre or other way    ,

No, air gun will not work ,especially on a problem spot you've been fighting for long time, need more sudden cool off,it seem to have faster results for me than a wet rag or air blower.

Thanks to all your help... Victory is mine!

Larger shrinking disk and ice water did the trick.  :2thumbs:

BTW, a hand held squeegee is nice for this type of work.
