What are the correct torque specs for the two 3/8 16 bolts that fasten the water neck to the water pump housing?
The Service manual says 30 ft.pds.,; the author of "how to rebuild your big block mopar" says 15 ft.pds.

Too much torque and you warp the neck, too little and you got a leak.

Any suggestions?

I have tried hand tight, but with little success. The bolts get loose and I get a leak. I am going to try the 30 ft.pds as recommended by the FSM but this is much more than hand tight. Thanks for your replies.

oh thats interesting  :scratchchin:
what are the threads like in the waterpump housing & on bolts ?? are the mating surfaces badly corroded pitted , or warped  :scratchchin: ,  are you using any RTV etc on both sides of the paper gasket ??
if if every thing checks out  , you  prolly only need 1/2 to 3/4s of the turn with a wrench  , whats it feel like ,  go tight then looseish :scratchchin:

you get the feel of how tight bolts need to be with out braking or damaging stuff !!!  really hard to explain  but comes with time ! when you have been turning wrenches for a living 5 10 20 plus  years ete you can even guess how much torque your pulling on a wrench &  test it with a torque wrench after & be pretty accurate  , not saying there is no need for torque wrenches  , because there is  , when building a engine , centre section ,  transmission , suspension /steering  ,  i even use one when tightening  lug nuts  :yesnod:

Hi tan top,

The trouble I described was with the chrome waterneck from Mopar. After changing the gasket for the third time, I noticed that the housing was warped. I have now cleaned, repainted and reinstalled the original cast iron one (perfectly straight). I use RTV on both sides of the gasket, install the thermsotat and housing and let cure overnight before torquing to specs with the torque wrench. Right now I have torqued the bolts to 30 ft.pds as per FSM. Maybe hand tight as you described should have been enough for a straight waterneck.

By the way thanks for your ideas.

Yes, 40 year old oem cast waterneck still straight; new Mopar chrome one was seriously warped after a few hundred miles. Where has quality gone?
