torque plates worth extra cost?

im in the process of getting the 440 rebuilt. the shop wants like an extra 100 to use the torque plates to bore the motor. does it really make a difference or is my money better spent elsewhere?

A Torque Plate is used when honing the bores to fit the Piston Clearance.
Using them properly, entails using a thread chaser to clean all the holes for the head bolts, to insure proper distortion of the Cylinders during the honing process, simulating the cylinder head installed. (Time)
Then,
TIME again, Torquing & unTorquing the Plates during the honing & cooling cycles, to insure "repeatability" of the Job.

Sounds to me like your Shop pays attention to details, and is charging accordingly ?

Haven't tested lately, but we figured somewhere's around 25-30hp on similarily built 500hp 440's back in the Day as the difference,
however,
tough to say depending upon how badly the cylinders "distort" on a given block, as no 2 are the same ?

$100 don't buy squat anywhere else !

wow 25hp outta doing that? sounds good to me. there is a suspision my crank is cracked but i dont know for sure as of yet. im entertaining one of the 440 source stroker kits as i need new pistons and rods anyway.  the blocks at .030 over now and he said he doubts itll clean up at .040 over.

Then as your cylinder walls get thinner, even MORE good reason to pay for the plates to be used.

Final hone with torqueplates is allways advisable...proper ring seal is vital !
