When the lights are on its OK. When I turn on the high beams, they stay on for about one minute then they go out,amp gauge stays normal,if I push off the highs the lows come back on.Ive changed the dimmer switch and lead and plug to it.Its overloading somewhere it seems, need to find this before it burns something.Anybody???

Maybe a wire where it goes through the rad support has worn through the insulation and is causing a direct short? :shruggy:

circuit breaker bad in headlight switch?

Rolling_Thunder

i would bet it has something to do with the switch itself -  without relays there is a lot of power going through that thing...     I would test the lights directly to a battery - removing them from the problem. Check the wiring for any signs of problems - make sure that the connectors on the high beams aren't reversed - for some reason i think that would cause a problem.

Like said I d power check just the headlights to be sure there all good highs and lows. Then check color of wires and order there in at the headlight plug connection Purple red green. Then onto the Bulkhead connection point. Then go over the headlight switch and connection. And check floor dimmer and connection it has a tendacy to melt at that connector

My vote is for the headlight switch; switch on the high beams and put your ear near the switch to listen for a telltale click as the built-in circuit breaker pops and the lights go off.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Also check to make sure that you have a good ground connection on the negative wire from the battery to the radiator support.

resq302

If it is a correct negative battery cable, there won't be a ground wire from the cable to the rad support.  Only to the block.

Please educate me Brian.  Both my '64 Belvedere and my '68 Coronet have a ground wire from the negative battery terminal to the radiator support.  The headlights on my '64 quit working properly when that connection got dirty.  Do all Chargers come without that wire, or was there a change after '68?

my OE 66 Charger does not have the cable from battery to rad support....only the big cable from battery to block

then, on the firewall, there is a strap from the engine to the firewall

That is how my 69 charger is as well.  I will try and get a pic.
