C5X DAYTONA

Again 140mph with 3.55s and 7.00x15 Goodyear's with my 440 69 Charger Daytona.  O ya, on Bias Plys too.   That is 6300 rpm's on the tach.    No floating.  I enter into turn 8 at 131 and exit about 118 before I get on the brakes for 9.   Stock rear suspension with drum brakes, no rear bar and bigger sway and torsion bars up front.    Want to see it?  Be at Willow Springs on APR 14.   Spring Fling Speed Festival.  I will do it lap after lap all day long..     Have plenty of video of sitting on 150 with no floating over the years in another Daytona.     Vernon Judy went 210 MPH on the salt with 100% stock suspension and air shocks in the rear.   NO FLOATING..  Got that video too.     Might be the fact that these are wing cars but if you all think this is just dreaming we all have video and slips for the speeds.    I have never had a standard Charger body so I don't know where they float..   But I thought 69-70 Charger was around 150 unless there is some suspension issues.  I know my old 71 R/T Challenger was around 140 where it got light in the front.  But you guys with the cars that float at 110?  You might want to look your chassis over.   On a side note.   1960 Dodge Polara D500 with 383 ram induction and 3.23 138 mph is all it would do on GPS..  Now that was fun..   She was a flotin...         Oh and, Drag racing is for those who can't go around corners...  :nana:    I wish you guys that  ::) would really show up.     Hate mail starts NOW....
Caution.... Low flying aircraft.

Back in 1974 I had a 69 R/T 440, auto, 3.23 rear. Being young and very stupid, we used to take our cars out on the highway and just let them go right to the floor. I saw 145 before I chickened out and believe me there was a lot of float/loose chassis feeling to it. Kind of hard to slow it down quickly from speeds like that with drum brakes!

My engine is warmed over my suspension is stiffened up. Had the rear springs rearched and shackled to give the right attitude for high speed. I'm running 2:76 gears. I got no floating. Used to race back country roads at 110 -115 all the time. Car did get alittle squirrely racing 60 + on dirt roads, but that's to be expected. We raced well over 100 on Bias plys back in the day. Tires speed ratings are for a particular speed sustained for 1 hour. I had a Ford Torino loose his motor tailing me at 110. At the time I had a 340 in the car and it topped out at an indicated 135.

Maybe its speedo error.  145mph is about 6200 rpm. I've raced a lot of stockish 440s.  I never been able to hit 6200 rpm  - even in 1st gear.

Call me crazy,.. 'n i might be wrong but the only Charger I feel is capable of topping out that high is Angrier, the Oly charger, race's or maybe a few of the specially modded Wingcars,..  i guess it's possible a 500 Hemi might with the right gears, but those guys are too scared to drive that fast...

Well, I know the 1969 Dodge Polara police pursuit was clocked at 149 mph. I think the Charger is capable as well. :shruggy:

Actually, the rear end ratio could have been higher because the guy I bought the car from had swapped the rear end out after he broke the original one street racing.

Man you guys are wimps, I've had my 1969 540 Hemi Charger up to 225 mph at Le Mans old Mulsanne Circuit.  Then again this was in the videogame Forza Motorsport 3. :nana: :icon_smile_big:

I did my one and only top speed check on with my Satellite, a factory 383, 2.93 rear end car.  Back in 95 when Cobras were new i raced one down the freeway.  I still had pedal left and my speedo was pegged, i say f this and give it the rest of the gas.   I stayed in it way to long, 2 min or so, on flat ground, the way the car was floating around i must have been doing 140-150, i spun my No. 1 rod bearing doing it too, last time i do that.  I will save the 440 in the Coronet for other things.

hopefully more than 140 @ 1/4 mile next summer :2thumbs:

scstoddard70

I've had my 70 up to 152 with 2.76 gear. It was by far one of the scariest things I have ever done. I still had alot left too. That was with stock suspension and 18 year old mentality. I have been that speed in newer cars and it's not that bad 70s suspension is not good enough for those speeds or even close. Mine doesn't go over 75 now :icon_smile_big:

I have been 153 mph in my 66 charger, in the quarter mile! New goal is 200+ mph!  :icon_smile_big:

Chargen69

been up to 120 with my stock 383.  3:23 gears.  BUT, considering I had to hold the steering wheel 10-15 degrees to the left to stay straight, should be no surprise that the front end was all over the place, plus that was a heavy deer road, so I quit there.  when the car gets put back together, it'll never see more than 80 or 90
