Hi recently took my charger in to have the front end finished. While it was there the mechanic told me my alternator was out of alignment. He also said that the curved bracket that holds the tension for the alternator should be in front of the triangular piece when mounting. I looked at a website of someone restoring their chargers and it shows it in front of the triangular piece. But whenI look at brackets on EBAY they have some assembled for display for the auction and the curved piece is behind the triangular piece. can someone with a 440 post pics of their alternator brackets. Thanks Brian

Thanks for the pics. Any idea what your amp for your Altenator is? He also said mine was going bad. Brian

I think if lower and upper brackets are aligned or offset is just because is an A/C or not equiped...

on my assembly the "ear" of the alt is set in front of upper bracket, and the curved one is towar to front...that makes both brackets offset. Althought what I think is really offset is the upper bracket.

In this case, both pics posted show the upper brackets separated fom engine ( water pum housing ) and located on different bolts. Mine is bolted and directly make contact with water pump housing.

Casuality, both pics are from NON A/C Cars and mine is A/C car ( even is a 3rd gen )

here is how is bolted on A/C cars.

1- my upper alt bracket is smaller AND bolts on different engine bolts ( numbers 1 on pic ) what makes to meet surface of bracket and water pump housing
2- Number 2 bolt is only used to fit the lower bracket
3- that offset makes the ear of alt set IN FRONT of upper bracket

I'm searching the best pic to whow differences but I can't find it. not even of my assembly.

That alt is around 60 amps or lower alt.

I like to run either 45 or 60 amp alternator. My last ''NEW'' 60 amp went bad in one year   :shruggy:

With an AC car that would be the way to go, But I have never had an AC car so the 60amp works well.
The alt in my minivan is a 220amp and smaller than an old 35amp.

Questions about the Alternator. I just bought a newer alternator from the parts store. It's not original and is a little bigger than the original. It fits fine but the belt comes really close to the bolt I have circled in the picture. My bolt has a washer. Would removing the washer like the one in the picture be OK. Also what is the best way to align the thing. I have a washer/spacer on the inside of the curved piece that sits right up against the alternator. It was there when I took off the old alternator so I put it back. Can anyone tell me where they have their washers. Brian

There never was a washer used in either location, yes when you take that washer out at the bracket
your belt will have more room, the belt is still kind of close but thats just the way these were put together.

Brian, the bolt circled is a special "castelated head" bolt that has a short head.   it uses no washer.
