Possible rust issues on 2nd gen Charger

Hi gang,
Looking to buy this 2nd gen Charger, maybe.  Would you please give me your thoughts on the extent of rust that you can see in these pictures?  The car is located on the east coast and I'm in California, so I'm trying the best I can to sift through the good and bad ones with pictures before spending all the money on airfare and time off from work.  Ideally, I'm looking for an above average weekly driver.  So, no project car and no trailer queens either.  The car has been on the east coast its whole life supposedly with minimal miles and supposedly a survivor.  So, on a scale from 1 to 10, with 1 being minimal surface rust to 10 being cancerous rust, would you kindly give me your feedback to the severity of the rust that you can tell.  Also, how long with the condition of this rust last until I really need to address the problems, without spending too much more money?  These are pretty much the only pics he sent of the undercarriage.  Thanks gang.

trying to upload a few more pics... but for some reason there is an error saying that there is already a same filename as the one I uploaded and I even changed the names of the new pics  :shruggy:

CB

You need pictures of the whole trunk area and 1/4 panels, frame rails, floorpans, etc etc
If he doesn't have or won't provide pictures, expect the worse.
East coast cars = salty roads in winter = more chance of rust.
If I was in CA I would search there, better chance of finding decent drivers with minimal rust issues. :Twocents:

Those pictures are really evasive, you can only see the suspension, and a little surface rust doesnt matter...

As CB says, you need pictures of the frame, floors and quarters!

the only reason I was interested was because it's a 68 R/T...

Hemidog

I don't see any rot in that picture...
It's heavily undercoated, which can be a good thing or a bad thing...

Do you have more pictures?

motorcitydak

Dont see anything alarming in those pics but the pics do not show very much. Are you planning on flying to the coast then driving the car back to Cali? Id be much more concerned with the shape of the motor, trans and suspension then the possible rust

Those pictures don't show enough to tell anything. Being from NY all my life and looking at & buying more than a few vintage cars from this area, I can tell you it's very rare for a car of that age that has been from here all it's life to be rust free. It IS possible though. I recently looked at a '67 GTX that was absolutely rust free & original. Of course, it was always kept in a garage and had very few miles on it. With these cars, unless you have it on a lift and are able to look under the carpet etc., it's very difficult to tell how bad the rust is. I would ask for clear pictures of specific areas under the car (floors, trunk, inside quarters & rocker panels, around windows etc.). If he's not willing to provide these I would walk away. After all, you are in CA...the place where I would look for a rust free car.   :2thumbs:

Another option is to hire an inspector to go and look at it for you.

Agree with the rest of the guys, you need pics of the rust-prone areas.  Ask for pics of the quarters, trunkpan, windshield tracks, roof and enginebay/cowl area.  This guy is not showing you anything....beware  :o

I have to say this is so odd.. I'm on the east coast looking for a Charger and all I seem to find are cars on the west coast.  :brickwall:  (well, ones I am interested in anyhow.)

The advice provided above is all good and trust me when I say that folks around here are wonderful and always willing to help.  :2thumbs: I use a mashup site called AutoTempest to search and find it useful and there are many others: http://www.autotempest.com

I don't know what your price range is but here is car in San Fran that might be worth checking out. Not sure where on the west coast you are though.

Is it a blue (QQ1) RT that is "all original", Black interior, black stripe, auto console? Think it had AC too. There was a guy trying to sell blue 68 RT for like 40-50k last fall and he had a real attitude in his ad. Needless to say it sat on craigslist for quite some time.

You live in California and you're shopping for 40-year-old cars on the east coast? :nono: :badidea: :image_294343:

Dude, draw an invisible line down the Continental Divide and don't cross it. I've been where you are and it isn't worth the hassle.

If you get the car home & you find out it's a turd, you'll wish you invested the time & money to go look at it and drive it. Anything can be made to look good in pictures, and 95% of sellers are not going to be up front with you about issues.

You hit the nail on the head, I've decided to pass on this one because the guy was a jerk.  He refused to send me anymore pics and he said he would not negotiate any price over the phone... so he expected me to pay hundreds of dollars and the time for a cross-country trip while not knowing if I would be in the same ballpark in price.  He actually started raising his voice at me for even talking about price... HELLO, money is involved here!!!!  ::)

How about west of the Louisiana Purchase Territory instead?  :D

Sounds to me that he does not want to sell the car, or that it is a piece of junk!!
Refuses to take more pictures, and does not want to even talk about the price......hmmmm .......run away from the deal, or get someone to go an check the car out! I mean....you could be lucky that the car is nice, and the price is ok........just an owner with a personality even a mother can barely handle!!
Since we only live once, and all this is not just a dressed rehearsal, but the real thing............ Well, enjoy it!!!!
