4-speed Question

Was bringing the '71 back from a show today.  Fairly close to home I run through the gears a little stronger than normal.  Nothing near a strong shift...maybe up to 4000rpm.  Got into the driveway and noticed that I could shift into the 3-4 gate without depressing the clutch...and nothing engaged.  1-2 and Reverse work just fine...no leakage under the car, etc.  I haven't had a chance to get under the car...I just parked it.  Anyone have any idea what might have happened?  I think maybe I screwed up a shift rod?

Any help is most appreciated.

sounds like the shift plate that bolt's to the 3-4 gear on side of trany  the nut loosen up or the rod came off.plus if so take the  plate off and make sure it's not rounded out it should be round on the ends and square in the middle.

Yeah, definitely sounds like a linkage issue...should be relatively easy fix.

Thanks guys...appreciate it.  I've had some costly home repairs lately and I was hoping that this wasn't going to be a major $$$.

I agree. Mine did that last summer. I put lock washers on and it hasn't happened again.

I was driving out to a show back in 2002 in Lancaster, PA.  About an hour and a half into the drive with the car, I came up to a traffic light.  Downshifted to first.  Light turns green, I cant shift out of first.  Luckily, I was able to pull off to a service station that was about to close but he knew a guy who was big into mopars about a block down from him and he had me follow him there taking it nice and easy in the shoulder.  The guy had me pull the charger into his bay and threw it up on the lift with me still inside the car and found out that the nut for 1-2 gear for the shift plate that connected the rod to the trans had backed off enough to cause the plate to get jambed up.  5 secs later and him telling me that I owed him nothing, we were back on the road.  When I got home, i backed all of the nuts off and put some blue med. strength lock tite on it and all has been good since. :2thumbs:

On the driver's side. That pic was taken while trans was out of the car laying on a workbench.

Yes, those are the nuts I was talking about with either using a lock washer or nylock nut or even the correct nut with a little bit of med. strength lock-tite.
