Weird VIN stamp

I have a 3rd gen and was verifying that my rad support stamp matched the VIN.  They are off by one number. ???  The last digits on my title AND door are 123459 but the rad support is 123458 (these numbers are just examples, not the real ones).  Was that rad support meant for the car ahead in the production line?  Any ideas of what's going on would be appreciated cause I'm  :shruggy:

That's interesting. Probably just a mis-stamp. What does your cowl stamp say?

Two of the three chargers I own have this issue, one is like yours, last digit is one off. The other car is the third last digit meaning the #'s are 100 apart. I have been told by many experts that this is just a mistake in the stamping process in that once the car body is welded together the person adjusts the "stamping tool" to Match the tag (since I was led to believe the sheet does not meet the car until after paint, makes sense since paper and sparks only coexist if you wish to destroy the paper). If this is true there must be a few duplicate chassis #'s kicking around. Just to speculate, I wonder how many cars in a sequence would have been affected before the person realized the the digits are one off.
One must really marvel at this whole process in that when a car is finally scheduled and in que, B/C's are printed in separate areas (read: not even remotely close to one another) such as the dash assembly area and as the chassis itself moves along these remote assembly areas build the required components and then convey them so that at the precise moment the chassis needs that component it is available in que arriving from a subassembly area very far away. This would lead one to question how many were actually built "exactly" as ordered, or, to put another way, when customer receives the car how often was there "I didn't order this option and I am not paying for it" or "where is this option that I ordered" .

Hi,

had a 70 Charger RT 440, end of VIN was 248530, VIN on dash matched doorsticker, Fender Tag, trunk rail number but on the rad support it was 258430. Engine bay was unaltered and still original paint. A factory mistake

Good info guys, thanks.  Good to know it's pretty common.  Or is it...    :scratchchin:  Was almost thinking my '72 318 car was worth $10000000000000.00
