I hope to replace the motor mounts on my '68 Charger (383 727) in the next few weeks and I've never done this before.  :hah:  What's the best way to go about doing this if all you have to work with is a couple of hydraulic jacks and some jack stands?   Or is it best to get it on a hoist?  :scratchchin: Any pitfalls to avoid/tips that anyone can provide?  Is it hard to do?  :shruggy:

I'd appreciate whatever you guys could pass along... :yesnod:

Put front of car on jack stands, loosen the tranny mount, then do one side at a time.   You will need to use a jack under the motor.  Jack up the side you are doing just enough to get it done.  I used a floor jack and a 2x4 block.

OK, thanks SK68.

Any other tips to pass along or things to avoid?  :scratchchin:  Are the bolts easy to access?  :shruggy:

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

And keep an eyeball of your fan to shroud clearance while you jack up each side.....You may want to keep the shroud loose to avoid breaking it.

Excellent stuff guys!

I had come across Ron's thread on the mount mods using the 3/8" grade 8 bolts and nylon nuts before, so I've already got my nuts and bolts sitting on the workbench ready to go!  What a great idea!  Thanks for making sure I saw that Mike.  :yesnod:

I wouldn't have thought about the fan shroud before starting this job... you may just have saved me some time and $$ Max.  :icon_smile_wink:

Appreciate the help guys...  :2thumbs:

What happened to me once was changing the driver side mount  was when i lifted the engine to replace the one side, my passenger side snapped...so in my past experience, i think it best to lift the entire engine up and clear both mounts.

If you have mounts with a PASS THROUGH bolt keeping upper and lower mounts together, (ANY YEAR-ANY MOTOR), I suggest grinding a bevel on the leading point of the bolt to ease in getting the bolt back in. It's easy to do and can make replacing mounts a much easier job.  ;)

Also, do not put the jack under the oil pan!!!  You're sure to make a big dent in it!  I know this sounds obvious but I did this in my younger years (lazy, stupid).  Use a block of 2 x 6 or some other method to protect your car and engine.

This is exactly the kind of stuff I'm after... thanks guys!  :2thumbs:
Looking forward to being able to put the pedal down without worrying about the engine launching itself through the hood!   :drool5:
I'm hoping to get at this next week.
Got my notepad out, keep the tips coming guys.  :popcrn:

Yeh, that wouldn't be good. Look cool as hell since it wouldn't be my car but still not good in the grand picture.   :D

Yeah, I don't imagine dancing with your engine as it comes through the hood of your car is ever a good thing... but it still makes a better dance partner than some of the girls I danced with after consuming large quantities of alcohol!    :smilielol:

Any of you guys have any difficulty accessing the bolts?  One in particular looks like it might pose a few challenges...   :scope:

If so, what did you do?   :shruggy:
