Help the uneducated remove his gauge cluster.

I bought a replacement gauge cluster to replace the one I'm currently using and I've run into a problem. I've unscrewed all the screws holding it into place and I can pull it out about an inch and then it gets caught on the steering column and the top of the dash. I've tried about every angle to get it out and I've run out of ideas. There must be something I'm missing. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Makes things a lot easier if you drop the steering column but im pretty sure you can do it without but its a bit tough, and dont forget to remove the speedo cable.

All that wiring (especially the ammeter cables) makes it difficult. I removed one before without disassembling anything else but it's very difficult and you have to watch out that you don't scratch anything else. It is a lot easier if you drop the steering column but then it's a pain to get under the dash to undo the wiring.

Yes....removing the speedo cable will help....Also (69 models)  removing the vacuum lines from the headlight switch helps...and one more thing....there are "tangs" which holds the wiring harness in place...get those loose and you should have plenty of space to work with...lower the steering column makes life easier too

Definitely lower the steering column...it will go a lot easier. And tape the top of the steering column to protect it and the cluster.    Ask me how I know.

Okay lower the steering column. Next question is what is involved in lowering the steering column?

You just have to loosen the bolts to drop the steering column slightly.
