1973 Dodge Charger Cutting off

Hello, I am pretty much done restoring my Charger SE 318 but I have this one issue that does not allow me to drive it to far because the car cuts off. After it does cut off, if I let it sit for 5-10 mins it will start up again. The coil I had in the car used to get too hot (it was a performance version) so I bought the one that belonged to it. I was told by my mechanic that it could either be the electronic ignition, the coil, or the fuel pump. I replaced all those plus got a rebuilt carb but the car still cuts off when I come to a red light/stop sign/full stop, it does not do it every time but enough that I worry about cutting off in a very busy place. Could there be a wiring issue or is there something else that could be the problem? I appreciate any help.

The engine is running smoothly then shuts off, like you turned off the ignition while sitting at a stoplight? Engine will then crank,but not start . After sitting for 5-10 minutes it starts up and runs smoothly?

I would suspect a tempurature related ignition problem. Assumming you have a stock Mopar Electronic ignition I would suspect the distributor pickup, ballast resistor or coil. You did say you replaced the coil. The coil should get warm ,but not hot . While driving the coil gets it current thru the run side of the dual ballast resistor to limit the current to prevent overheating.

If you cannot get it to do this in you driveway, go for drive in an empty parking lot or somewhere safe and get it to quit. Pull the coil wire and have an assitant try to start the car while you hold the wire 1/2 inch away from fom the intake . Do you have a healthy spark?
