Mufflers mild, moderate, agressive

yeah yeah I know that mufflers have been discussed before but from the threads I have read its all about loud sound and performance.

I currently have flowmaster 40 mufflers and they drive me crazy on long trips.
The flowmast 40's sound great bombing around town making lots of noise. loud pipes save lives.

Next year I'm going to be making a 6,000 mile trip and I would like a little sanity and radio enjoyment time.

I have been looking at the flowmaster super 50 series mufflers that are made for SUV and muscle cars and are clasified as mild instead of agressive.

Anyone running super 50 series?

Maybe some sugestions?
What about Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers?

I'm thinking about having the muffler dude weld flanges on the mufflers so I can unbolt them and swap when I flip flop.

I put the Flowmaster 50's on my '73 a few years back. Nice sound, but, of course, not as loud as the series 40.  :icon_smile_wink:  Let me know if you want a sound file at idle and at speed.

I ran both the 40 and 50 series, the 50 were much quieter....I ran a 3 inch system with the 40s and a 2.5 inch with the 50s if it helps

sounds almost like straight exhaust.

How does it sound inside the car?  Do you get a droning sound?

I have heard that adding "H" pipe will help with the droning issue...  :shruggy:

Also this is straight from the flowmaster catalogue

The 40 series (aggressive) will generally resonate or "drone" inside the vehicle, around 1800-2000 rpm and again,
around 2400-2600 rpm.

Can't beat the Magnaflows. nice low rumble around town & sound smooth @ high speeds. you'll have no problem enjoying some tunes with a set of those mufflers.  :Twocents:

I would seriously consider the Dynomax Super Turbos, if you are going to be spending considerable time on the road.  They are going to be quiter than everything else that has been discussed so far.  At first they might seem quiet, but after an hour or two going down the road, they start to seem plenty load enough. I would get the longer body muffler. :Twocents:

500" NA, Eddy head, pump gas, exhaust manifold with 2 1/2 exhaust with tailpipes
4150 lbs with driver, 3.23 gear, stock converter
11.68 @ 120.2 mph

After going round and round I decided to go with the Dynomax Super Turbo Mufflers.

after listening to many sound files I like the sound of these and with the packing in them they should not drone or resanate in the car like the flowmasters.

When they show up and I get them installed I will let you all know what I think.

Steve, Steve, Steve. I got the DynoMax Super Turbos on my Road Runner and you've heard them!   :slap:  And you can hear them again in just 8 days at Ironstone.  :lol:

The Super Turbos are as quiet as anything out there. Connected to a highly modified Hemi, with TTI headers and 3" exhaust, and they are just plain quiet. What you remember was the rumble of the cut-outs open, cruising around with open headers.

I'd recommend these mufflers as exactly what is needed to not be heard. And then splurge on Doug's cut-outs to be heard and have fun. Best of both worlds. See you soon, Dan.
