What does 68 through 70 Dodge Charger RT weigh in at vs. 69 Roadrunner with 440?

My last two Mopars were a 1970 Dodge Charger 500 with a 440 in it, great car that I sold fall of 2008, and a 1969 Road Runner, with a 440 in it, that i just bought last month.

I have never done the research on this but I would imagine a stock 68 through 70 Dodge Charger RT, with a 727 tranny weighs around 3800  lbs empty, and my 69 Road Runner, pretty much stock, also with a 727 tranny, problably tips the scales at around 3700 lbs?

I am just curious and does anyone have some real world info on the weight differences between the 2 cars?

Thanks in advance.

Let's try this, surely someone knows what a stock, empty, 1969 Dodge Charger RT weighs with a torqueflight tranny in it?

I put my 68 440 727 on the scales with about 1/2 tank of gas and with me out of the car it was 3,680lbs.

Nice, my educated guess is that my 69 Runner with its 440 and TF 727 will come in about the same weight and she will hit some ACCURATE scales this spring!

Keep the answers coming boys, which car is heavier, or are they about equal in weight?  :2thumbs:

I don't know, have never gotten to a set of scales. I read somewhere that it is 4020. Correct? :shruggy: The Hemi is about 3000 pounds of that. :eek2:

I am curious as well, though I don't know what I would do with the info when I find out. I continue to use all the aluminum I can. (Guinness in the can, no bottles!)

Don't forget that the RR (probably?) has a bench seat and the Chargers have more trim, upper door pads, bucket seats, and (usually) consoles and vinyl tops. So, with drive trains being equal, the RR will still weigh less.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Good point Troy, and yes my 69 Runner does have a bench seat!  :2thumbs:

There's a big obvious difference that nobody has mentioned so far - the RR has about half a foot less bodywork extending out past the rad support on the front end.  And within that extra bodywork on the Chargers, the grille & headlight assys are much heavier than the RR units too.

Great point.  :2thumbs:  So who has some real world number on what a stock 69 Runner with a 440 engine in would weigh?  Someone must have  some quick access to this info I did a google search but came up empty!  :brickwall:

A 1969 Plymouth HEMI 4sp Road runner was 3,940lbs.   A 69 RR  A12, 440 w/4spd was 3,435lbs   That's the best I can do for you....

That's great info bro, thanks!   Wow, the Hemi was over 500 lbs more than the 69 A12 Roadrunner 6 pack car that's amazing.  Well at least my 69 Roadrunner has the complete 6 pack look with the same fiberglass lift off hoo and plain black steel wheels, so maybe she will only come in at around 3600 lbs?  :coolgleamA:

Mine was 3750 with A/C, power windows, and a 383 with a 727 TF.  According to the title...its a base model 69 Charger if that is of any help.

Scaregrabber

You would have to weigh the two cars on the same scale. I see weights posted all the time that are all over the place. I think the Charger has to be 100-200lbs heavier than a Road Runner. Extra body length, plusher interior, hideway headlights etc.

In the 1969 (Dodge) Dealer Data Book, there is some comparative information from Chrysler that should be close to what you're looking for:

Shipping Weight, lbs. (Approximate, not for licensing)

Charger (base model) 3,305
Charger R/T 3,575
Coronet Super Bee  3,396 (Coupe)
Coronet Super Bee  3,381 (Hardtop)

Looks like maybe 200lbs. difference between the Charger R/T and a SuperBee, although it doesn't say how the R/T was equipped... probably 440/727, but who knows.  I don't have the Plymouth Data Book otherwise I'd post the RoadRunner's published shipping weight.

Doesn't the Hammtramck website carries all those specs on seller handbooks ?

Good point... just checked, and here are the '69 Plymouth RR approximate shipping weights:

Belvedere RoadRunner  3,390 (Coupe)
Belvedere RoadRunner  3,405 (Hardtop)

About the same as the SuperBee shipping weights.  Now, to answer your specific question we would need to know how much more a 440 weighs vs. a 383.   :shruggy:  Any weight difference (increase) in the 440 over the 383 would reduce the 200+/- advantage the RR has over the Charger R/T.

I think it all depends on the option package the particular car came with.....

69rtse4spd

Just had the 70 out today & ran by the stone quarry. On the scale she weighted 3780 lbs. with out my fat ass in it. The car is a base 70 XH with 446 alum. heads, water pump, TTI. headers, 727, 8.75, bucket seats, ac. & no console. Good starting point once I start to change things out will see what she weighs then.
