I went for a ride on my motorcycle around town this afternoon since it was such a nice day. I stumbled upon this scene. Sorry for the crappy pics, I only had my IPhone. I got there just after the Fire Dept got the flames out. They made me stay back a fair distance so I had to crop the pics so you could see them better.

I got a chance to talk to the owner. He said he was just coming from getting the car out of storage to go to a car show in Oshawa (just outside Toronto). His wife and 6 month old were in a car following him and about 10 minute into the trip he saw smoke and then flames coming out of his console. He stopped and before he had a chance to even grab his wallet the car was engulfed in flames. He told me he hadn't done any work on it lately and had driven it a few times without any problems before this happened. Car was highly modified. Chopped roof, custom paint, tubbed, full cage, done to the hilt 440. Big mother street slicks. He said he had big money in the car.

Life isn't Father Knows Best anymore, it's a kick in the face on a saturday night with a steel toed grip kodiak work boot and a trip to the hospital all bloodied and bashed.....for reconstructive surgery. But, what doesn't kill us, makes us stronger, right?

Ouch!!  :icon_smile_dissapprove:

Oh man I am cryin' inside. Those are pics I have to hide from the wife, she's paranoid about car fires.

I didn't know that paint would just sort of melt in one piece (the door). How sad.

He said it started in the console? Must have been electrical? The pink wires to the lights carries some power..it could have shorted, started burning and caught the carpet or console body on fire and spread?

Looks like an engine fire to me. He said smoke and fire came up through the console but with the mods done to that car I doubt it was a stock console. Probably had a race shifter and base. I didn't get to see the interior but from the pics you can see it has bucket seats not the typical Runner bench. Too much front end heat damage to have originated in the interior. I agree with what has already been suggested that a split or damaged fuel line and electric fuel pump fed the fire. IMHO

bull

No offense but it looked like it was pretty much ruined before it caught fire.

Damn, that's a bummer!!!! I've been paranoid about fire ever since I was a kid. I have storage insurance on my Charger just in case my garage burns. I carry a fire extingusher with me in the Duster incase the 40 year old wiring decides to go but I've checked it and it all seems fire. A bad fuel line (could of gone bad while in storage) sounds like a possible cause of this. I just changed all the lines on my Duster.

I had to repaint a 72 Cuda after it had a fuel line break at fuel pump & burst into flames. LEON.

Hood ::)  Luckily this being at the Gratiot Cruise cops & Fire department near by so fire put out quick limiting damage. LEON.

Wow what a shame about the Runner.
It's gotta be your worst nightmare that something could happen like that.
Like 69bronzeT5, I always make sure I have a good extinguisher in my cars too.
Ya just never know when it could be your turn...
Gotta love a '69
