I pulled my VIN tag off a few days ago because the Charger is about to go to the paint shop and I don't want it getting lost. Right now it's resting snug and warm in my safe. I was wondering though about matching the paint to the paint that will be used by the body shop. Then I got to wondering if anyone has ever just clear coated their VIN tag so it stands out more? I have a glass bead blaster so I could clean it up pretty good but would a clear coat work on it?

Troy

VIN tag or fender tag? I didn't think the VIN tag was painted? The fender tag should be body color though and you can just use the same paint from the body to paint it separately (there should be some left for touchups).

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

Blast it and srew it to a 2 foot long 2x4 and take it to them when they are jaming! Reason I say a 2 foot long 2X4, harder to lose than the tag by it self.

I know it's supposed to be body color, I was just wondering if anyone has seen or done something different such as clear coat their fender tag to make it more visible/legible yet incorrect.

I did nothing to my fender tag, just left as it was with the original paint on it. I did this to show what the original color was since I changed mine to B5 from green.

This is what I'm talking about:

I think it looks good, not too mention easier to read.  Sometimes adding paint can distort the lettering.

Bull, you could paint it the color of the car, then uses 1000 grit on a block and knock off the paint on the letter's then clear coat.
