Do your cars ever smell like there's a gas can sloshing around in the back seat?  I didn't notice anything in cooler weather but it can get pretty heady with the windows down or the vents open.  I'm sure some gas smell is normal, especially when you're laying into it, but how much is normal?  This is a pretty new carb with a metal fuel line, and there isn't any visible leakage...

check to see if the  rubber  part of the  vent pipe in the trunk is not cracked split  or come off

I checked in the trunk.  Not exactly sure where the vent pipe is - but it is missing a small body plug on the pasenger's side.  Since I'm certain there aren't any leaks, I know the exhaust is exiting behind the car.  Could this small hole really be a cause?  The smell is strongest when the window is down or the vents are open.

A couple photos:  One of the missing body plug, and the other of the rubber seal around the filler tube which appears to be in good shape.  Is that the rubber part you're talking about?

What I'm smelling is most likely normal... but it can't be healthy.

the gas tank filler tube  , there is a small vent pipe that runs at the back of it  , can just see it in your second picture make sure its vented to the out side Bottom part ) & where it connects to the tube its self  ( look up in side where the quarter where the filler tube /quarter / cap are attached , you will see  where the vent tube is attached  !!!!  the rubber part is not cracked or come off !
good idea to put a plug in that hole also in the floor  :yesnod:

Thanks - I'll take a closer look this time!

You can't see it from under the car, it vents inside the frame rail. I would check the rubber gasket that seals the fuel fill tube to the tank also. :scratchchin:

So sorry to resurrect this thread but I'm still having problems and finally took a picture of the ventilation tube.  I'm not clear on where that vent tube *should* be exiting.  It stops short, and appears to be exiting into the trunk rather than following the fill-pipe all the way back down past the gasket.  Is that how it is supposed to be?  Up top, the hose connecting it to the fill pipe is good.

I should also mention that the fumes are pervasive throughout the cab.  They're much worse when the vents are open or the windows are down.

There will be a hole it should have a rubber sealing grommit but that may be gone. It will be close to the fuel pipe but over the top of the frame rail channel, that small tube sticks down in there and should be sealed off from the trunk. Right now you are venting your gas tank inside your trunk!   :eek2:

I see, I see!  Thank you both for your replies.  (That photo was very helpful.)  I will work on getting this fixed asap.

If I can beg your attention for one more question.  My trunk pan doesn't have a hole for the vent tube to go back down into.  The trunk was replaced before I owned the car so maybe they used a re-pop that didn't have one  :shruggy:

But to confirm, does the vent tube continue down and reconnect with the gas tank - or does it simply empty out into the framerail and the atmosphere?  Before any holes are drilled, I'd like to know what *should* be done with it to keep within the original intent of the design.  What was the stock configuration?

Thanks for the clarification,
M
