All,

Hello!!! This is my first post relative to a problem...I'm Mike, TUFCAT's brother (don't judge me!! just kidding!) .... 451 stroker, iron head, thermoquad,  XE274 cam...

engine did not jump time, compression good, orange box, damn thing won't go!

backfires through carb, kicks back, shoots flames...it ran great untill I messed w/distributor springs...lighter springs put in.

HELP!

72chargerSE

I have to say it didn't run great before I messed with the dizzy, it always has been hard to start..now it won't

tricky lugnuts

No start issues:
Check for your fuel . . . nice mist out of carburetor with throttle.
Check for spark . . . off the coil and off the spark plug wires.

If you swapped distributor springs and now it won't start - maybe you could put the earlier spring back in and see what you get.

With the backfire and poor performance, it almost sounds like a timing issue.

If you pull the coil spark plug wire off and turn the engine over, if your timing's off (too advanced, I believe) the engine will really struggle to turn over . . . It should be nice and steady with the starter motor running. Of course I guess it also could be a carb issue, backfiring and shooting flames like that.

Sorry I couldn't be more help! Best of luck. My Charger's down right now, too.  :P

Did you pull the dist.? If so, Sounds like you mighta got it in 180 Off....

If not, I'd leave the "Curve kits" on the shelf...

take in mind MP dist shaft is around 90 degrees off from the stock indexing
Venezuelan RT 74 400 4bbl, 727, 8.75 3.23 open. Now stroked with 440 crank and 3.55 SG. Here is the History and how is actually: http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,7603.0/all.html

If firing up into/through carb ignition must be to far advanced, firing before intake valve is closed, remove coil + then pull #1 plug and find and find compression stroke TDC. Check where rotor is pointing, if it's on #1 back out some timing, if not 180* out move spark plug wires around in order one or two holes to line it up.  :2thumbs:

got motor rebuilt.fired up cold sounded good. wouldnt run right.no power on the road. missing.pinging, had lots of compression. seemed to be in time.was told it was the dual dist. went to electronic. no change, but when i pulled it back out and took the timing cover off, the chain they installed was already stretched and when warmed up was loosing 2+ degrees of timing. went to a new doubler roller. nice and tight. if all else fails, look at the chain.

Well, I loaned him my old (but assumed good) electronic ignition distributor that I had laying around here....not sure if he tried to install it yet.  Mike, I also have a used black box ignition module, and an orange one (I think) around somewhere.

Do I need to do some more digging?
