Converting 69 vacuum headlight door actuators to electric

Has anyone converted your 68/69 vacuum headlight door actuators to electric?  I know the system the 70 has would be too much modifying especially for connecting the rod to the HL doors.  I was entertaining the idea of using door lock solenoids as they have close to the 2" travel required that the original vacuum pots have.  These solenoids have two wires on them and you change the direction of the solenoid by reversing the leads (similar to power window rocker switches).  I want to avoid using external switches for the doors and want to stick to using the headlight switch to work the doors (just like how the 70 works).  If I use a standard relay, the problem comes when I need to reverse the leads to close the doors again.  Also, I can't leave 12 volts on the solenoids for the duration of the doors being open otherwise they will burn out.  I guess I could rig up some limit switches on the doors to overcome this problem.  I would stick to vacuum but my 440 has a hefty cam that doesn't allow for a lot of vacuum.  I guess I could resort to using a vacuum pump but that sounds too easy.  Does anyone have a slick way of doing this conversion?  Any ideas?  Thanks,

How is it too hard to convert to a 70 style?  Im just asking... I dont own any 2nd gens, but have been around them a bit. I dont like the vacuum system either, the motor/rod system seems alot better to me.  I think I would attempt the 70 style swap before I started adding door locks and relays and stuff but thats just me.

I think I would have a hard time using the 70 setup (rod) because the way the 69 door brackets are.  I don't have a 70 parts car that I could rob the whole door and brackets off of.  I just thought it might be easier to do the relay/solenoid thing.  I may have to resort to the 70 doors and hardware.

I remember reading about somebody converting their 68 or 69 vacuum doors to electric and he used something that was designed for I think wheel chairs and he had a link to a little video of how they worked which was pretty slick, I will try to remember where I found that at, it may have been Norway Charger I am not sure.

no way to fix the vacuum ones? I have never seen a 2nd gen with vacuum headlights that did not work. Not one, not ever.  that's counting every cruise night and car show I have been too in the last 10 years.  also included my 1st 68 charger that I bought for 1100 in high school.  that car was a total hack job, but I will be damned if those lights did not work like a champ...   anyway, pm member daytonalo, he used pontiac headlight motors for his daytona clone, maybe something could work for your regular headlights.

The vacuum setup doesn't require a lot of vacuum at idle. Plus the reservoir under the battery tray helps it out even more at low vacuum conditions. When I first put my engine in, I was only getting 3.5-5 inches of vacuum before I finished tuning it and the headlight doors opened and closed fine.
