I am looking to find a transmission for my 68 Charger R/T, 440.   I am sure the number I need to find is 2801541.   I thought I had found one but it turned out to be the wrong numbers. I was able to find that it was for a 69 with a 383 motor. So here are my questions.
     1. The numbers on the transmission were as follows 2892091 L 26492491      The First number is what I used to identify it but What does the "L" stand for? Is the 26492491 The VIN# of the car it came out of?
     2. Since 68's did not have the VIN stamped on the motor Will A 68 Transmission have to purchase order number stamped on the Trans?
     3. Is there any way to tell if a transmission came out of a Charger VS a Roadrunner?
     4. Where can I find a book with all the transmission identifycation numbers in it. (a good one). Thanks Troy

1) 2892091 is the transmission part number, it's from a '69 A or B body with a 383HP. L is the plant coded and 2649 is the build date October 28, 1968. 2491 is the sequence number, the 2491st built that day.

2) '68's did have a partial VIN on the motor and trans but they were located on the top rather than the side.

3) On '69 and later the raised boss on the passenger side of the bellhousing will have a partial VIN which will identify the plant the car was built in, this won't pinpoint the exact body style but it can eliminate some.

4) Galen Govier's White Books have the info for some years and the mymopar.com website has part number info from '65-'85.
