Hi guys,

I have a few questions I would like to find out the answers to:

1) What rear end comes with a standard 318 with a 904 transmission? Is it a 8.25" diff?

2) Can the internals (ie axels and diff centre - or pumpkin as you guys call it) of a 8.75" go into a 8.25 diff/axel housing (in other words are the housings the same and just the internals different)

Your help is greatly appreciated!

I know for E body cars, if you got a 318 you would have gotten the 8 1/4 but could have also gotten an 8 3/4 rear.  B-bodys, I am not 100% sure.  As for parts interchange between the 8 1/4 and 8 3/4, I do not think that anything can be interchanged as the 8 3/4 used a third member the bolted in from the front of the housing vs. the 8 1/4 that had a differential cover on the rear.

Depends on the year, the 8 1/4" didn't arrive until '69.

Nothing interchanges between an 8 1/4" and an 8 3/4", the 8 3/4" is a drop-out...the 8 1/4" isn't..
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

So a 1968 Charger 318 car with a 904 trans would have a 8 3/4 rear? That would be handy to know for sure...I don't have any fender tag info...

8 3/4 in my early 69 318

I have also seen 318 cars with 8 3/4 rears, too.  I don't know if you can tell off of the fender tag or not.

Troy

All of my 68 Chargers (including 2 318 auto cars) have/had an 8 3/4" rear - except the 4-speed R/t which has a Dana.

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

8 3/4 '68 rear end will be a "742" case   as a '69 case would be a "489" case

In a 318 car I would expect to see a 741 case.

I believe all B-bodies had an 8 3/4 diff in 68 and 69...          in 1970 they started using the 8 1/4  i believe for the 318 cars

Thanks for all your input guys, but luckily for me this question is no longer as I will not be going down this path with a 318
