OK... I've been "toying" with the idea of putting an aftermarket A/C unit in the 67 when I pull it apart.

Anyone here have any experience, thoughts or opinions concerning the aftermarket units sold by Classic Auto Air, Vintage Air, etc???

Anyone?

I am also looking for advise on this. Classic Air seems to be a bit pricey.  I am not to concerned with stock appearance. I would love to have a under the dash A/C and heater with new controls. This universal kit from vintage air may work.

I posted this for Mike on another site.
Since chargerboy69 is also kicking it around I will re-post my info here too.

I installed a Classic Auto Air unit in mine and after about three years I finally have it working to a satisfactory level.

I made my own mounting bracket so the switch is not positioned backwards. The lever is short and not long enought to install the chrome cap on it.
I had to replace the thermostat with an adjustable thermostat. (Note:Both thermostats were made by Vintage Air)
I have had to replace the servo motor that controls the vents inside the unit twice and expect to have to replace it again. (one servo the plastic teeth broke off a gear inside and the second one the gear warped from the heat)
The heater control valve allows hot water to pass when closed so I installed a ball valve on the other side.
I run a 26 inch rad with two 2500 cfm fans and my motor runs about 15-20 degrees hotter when I run the AC.

Installation was not bad, only two new holes had to be drilled into the firewall in order to install the cabin box and the rest of the system fit pretty good. (Note: the passenger side vent gets removed and capped shut. Make sure you seal it really good or it will leak and you will have water in the cabin when it rains or you give the Charger a bath)
The AC vents don't look too bad.

My Wife is happy to have cold air blowing inside the car.

Its not a perfect solution but it works.

Hope this helps.

I put a Vintage Air in the 68 Firebird you saw when you was over.  It was a direct fit and I haven't had any problems with it.  I haven't researched whether they have a direct fit for the 70 RR yet but whenever the day or year comes I get the conversion done to it I'll be adding aftermarket air to it too.
