Hey gang..
Anyone have a situation where the Durango cranks, starts and then after about 3 to 5 seconds, dies? The ignition switch also seems to stick in the crank position when this happened yesterday. There has been off and on episodes where the switch would stick in the crank position and the starter would remain engaged until you physically turned it back off. But, yesterday was the worst. About ten attempts to start the 5.7 hemi resulted in a 3 to 5 sec. run, then immediately shut off. We left it and went to church in my other truck. Of course, after letting it sit for a while coming home from church, it starts. We have a warranty on it and will take it in. I don't feel secure now having my wife in it with our 4 yr. old daughter and getting stranded. Do these '06's have a memory in the computer for troubleshooting purposes for the tech. guys?

Cheers.

Not that you won't get some help here but you might try http://dakota-durango.com/ too. Those guys seem to know their stuff on most issues. I've got an '03 Durango and don't know much about your model.

Thanks Bull..... I'll give it a try.. The Durango's at the dealership now.. We'll see what they say. Someone on the moparts board suggested this, makes sense:

Sounds like the security computer or the key is losing it. If the key and security computer don't electronically handshake, the truck will start and run for about 3 seconds then the engine will die.

Sounds like a security thing...       the only other idea that I have would be the ASD Relay (Auto Shut Down) - if the computer does not see signal imputs from key sensors (Crank position, Cam position) it will only crank for about 5 seconds...

However - being that your car physically starts and run - the computer should see these signals....        I would naturally thing it is a keyed security thing...      If its under warranty I'm sure they'll re program the keys to the PCM.    :2thumbs:

x2, sounds like the SKIM security on the ECM is not recognizing the key. There is a chip in the key that the ECM has to sense, if not it will start and run for 3-5 seconds then die. It will do that 3 times then not start again. If that is what is going on, you may need a new key

They did find the problem and it's the "security board"? (SKIM security).... The previously mentioned interface with the ignition switch.. Unfortunately, the part is on national back-order.. So, I told them to call the warranty division and see about a car for the Durango's worthless to me if I can't depend on it being used by my wife and 4 year old daughter.. Not going to put them in a vehicle that may not start or die at any given moment...
