Charger Emblem question

So been looking at LOTS of chargers lately and noticed that many don't have the charger script emblem on the sail panels. Is this a result of them just simply being removed during the restoration or was there some rhyme or reason to them being put on or not by dodge? It doesn't seem to be a vinyl/no vinyl thing, or the fact that the SEs have their own flavor.

I personally like them on the car, and if they are supposed to be there were they commonly broken or so corroded that they were tossed? Maybe they caused rust issues where they were mounted and hence left off?

Are there repros out there to be had?

Thanks

Hard top or Vinyl, they belong there.

They are supposed to be there. They are usually pretty corroded so I think they get tossed sometimes when the car gets painted or the vinyl top is replaced. Up until a couple years ago you could still get them at the dealer. That supply is dried up and I wasn't aware that they were being reproduced. I have 10 NOS ones but haven't installed any yet. (Perhaps I should finish some cars?) I believe the grill emblem on the 68 (maybe 69 too) is the same dimensions but the pins are in different spots.

the ones i got for the sail panels have a slight bend to them to fit the curve... not sure it the grill one is the same, hmmm, i'll have to check that out. I bought mine for something like $45 each, nice, new and shining ;)

Ok, so it sounds like there are repros out there, that's good.

I notice that they seem to be missing more on the cars with no vinyl.

You will find lots of emblems here:

WOW, that's a whole lotta stuff there. Don't see Charger emblems specifically listed for 68-70 though.  I guess I will need to do some site searches to find where just to be sure. And, if not then I need to become Troy's best pal.  :D

So it would seem that lots of no vinyl cars get these holes plugged up during body work since the paint top cars without the emblems don't have holes in the sail panels. Seems that once they fill in the holes you run the risk of rust if you were to drill it out after the paint to apply the emblem.   :brickwall:

How long ago did you pick them up and do you recall where you got them from?

If you scroll about 2/3 of the way down, they have a charger emblem that says 66-74.  Not sure if it's the one you're looking for though.

All cars (68-70) originally got the emblems whether they had vinyl or not - except maybe SE but I'm not that familiar with anything after 68. I have seen a lot of cars with the holes still in the metal but none in the vinyl. I honestly think it's because they forget to reinstall the emblems once the vinyl is on (can't see the holes!). Other times I guess they could glop some filler in there and forget to open them up again. If you had to redrill holes you could/should coat the edges with something to deter rust. I believe there's supposed to be some sealant or rubber on the back of the emblem so water doesn't run into the hole (under normal circumstances).

I have been on a quest for the sail panel (c-pillar) emblems for my 1972 Rallye.  From what I can tell, these are very specific to 72 only.  The stud spacing is like nothing I have been able to find as reproductions and I have yet to find a set at a swap or on a parts car.  My car is a half vinyl top with body color c-pillars.  I took a few photos of the stud spacing and keep the photos in my phone so that when I come across a set of "Charger" emblems at a swap I know if they will fit.

Also I have yet to find a set that has the studs in the same place as the ones required for my car.

Here's what I can tell you about the "Charger" sail panel emblems. Same as what the guys said.......VT or no they all had the emblem. They are attached with speed nuts and require you to pull the headliner away from the sail panel just enought to get a "hard board" panel out. These are attached with one spring clip each. You can now get to the speed nuts. Whatever tool you use for this, don't drop it or the speed nuts because they will disappear into void. Lastly, when you reinstall the emblems coat the freshly drilled holes with some kinda rust preventative as mentioned earlier. If the holes are already there, weather seal by using some body shop dumbdumb on the speed nuts not the posts. Using this or any other material on the posts can cause squeeze out around the emblem. Hope this helps. Cheers

The special edition c-pillar emblems should look like this.

69*F5*SE

My 69 has the SE emblem and holes like above.  They look good also.

If you are reasonably small like me you can reach the speed nuts from inside the trunk. :D

I actually folded my big ass in the trunk and was reaching around up in there for those speed nuts when my lovely wife closed the trunk lid. On occasion her timing is perfect. I went to Napa auto parts and bought new speed nuts.

Those 72 rallye look the same as a 73SE on the doors. Don't have the part# book handy to compare.
Here's the 73SE badges
