A week or so ago I learned where to plug in the wire so that my temperature gauge would work, thanks Chris!  The first photo is the one Chris attached for me.

The second photo shows the same spot on my engine but it seems the hole has been plugged.

Has anyone encountered this before?

How is this piece removed?

What do I need to put in there?

Where to find one?

By the looks of the photo, someone has tried to remoe this already.  Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks.

Damn, that looks like its "fused" in there!

Maybe some heat from a torch and a lot of patience will get it out.

Another WP housing might be in your future........

Normaly I would say a shocket. In your case, maybe a tourch and a wrench. You could use the scondery mounting point on top, normaly has a pipe plug in it. Used a brass plug and tap for the sending unit.

Good idea Ken!   I forgot about that.

Actually I have one in there for an external electric temp gauge.....dont trust the accuracy of the orig (its about 15 º-20 º off)

I know it may be difficult to tell from this photo, but do I three ports on my water pump?  Are all of the water pump housings the same?

I think before I buy another water pump housing, I will attempt to heat up and remove that plug.  Worst case scenario, I'll be buying another water pump housing!

Now Chris, tell us more about your external electric temperature gauge!  Where is it mounted in the car?  Pics please!

You say you don't trust the factory gauge as it can be off by 15 - 20 degrees.  Are you talking about yours in particular or in general?

Would that be the case even if I had my cluster and gauges re-calibrated and restored by AutoIntruments?

I would say that is a general statment with the age of are cars. What cause the biggest problem is the transformer that is under the dash. Gauges work off 6 not 12 volts. With age the transfomer will let the voltage swing back and forth. That will cause your gaugues to act goofie. If you had or will have the gauges redone they will replaces the transformer and will make them read more accurate.

In general I dont trust MY gauges.   Im not saying that they cant be calibrated but as a piece of mind I installed an oil psi & water temp gauge in the pass side lower corner of the dash.

They are mounted upside down so that I can see the sweep of the needle while driving.
They are far back under the dash enough that the casual looker wont notice them.   They have black faces as well to "blend"
I also have a voltmeter tucked under the drivers side as well (you can almost see it next to my "foot" high beam switch cover ;) )...I bypassed my ammeter
Heres a crappy pic

As far as your WP housing, it looks like you have a nipple in the place of where the plug "should be"  Your top most hose should be over to the left

Who would carry the sending unit / probe that I need to install on my water pump housing so I can plug in my gauge?

Thanks so far!

Someone needs to make an adapter that will screw into that housing so you can add an aftermarket manual guage.  Can you use the factory sender with an aftermarket guage?
