Primer or color coat

Hey gang,

I'm hearing mixed opinions on a roof base coat to apply a new vinyl top over. Some are of the opinion that if the roof is rust free, primered/blocked and primered again the surface is then properly "sealed" for a new vinyl top. Others tell me a color coat over primered prep is better because primer absorbes moisture even if its covered with new vinyl. I'm in Cali and as far as I know you can't shoot epoxy primer here which would solve this delimma. Thoughts?

i treated the roof like my charger had no vinyl ,exactly the same primer & top coat  then lightly 320 ed the roof before sticking the top on

there's no need for color coat under vinyl. Paint does let moisture through also, unless you clear coat it (base/clear system)
I would find where you can get some epoxy sprayed on it and be done with it.

Well, as it turns out the shop cheated and shot my car with epoxy primer even though its illegal in Cali. I called this morning for an update as to when I can take it in for a vinyl top before the shop puts color on it. I was asking the guy about putting some color on the roof before the new top went on and found out the good news. No more worries for me. Thanks guys.
