That's the biggest lunacy in the automobile game these days.

Modern America professes to have all this concern about gas mileage.  But everything we build today is 125% scale compared to the "battleships" we drove back in the carefree days before the '73 oil embargo.

If you compare weight of today's cars to weight of 70's cars some if not most of todays cars weigh the same or more!

The picture is also taken at an Angle, so it does appear bigger... The Toyota's roof line is higher, but I had it on width, length,..... and style ;)

Great picture, and this is definatly true.  I was checking out some old road test on some Lancers, Subarus and even the Dodge Stealth and Mitsu clone, they all weigh over 3000lbs, and the Dodge/Mistu weighs 4000 something.

Just checked curb weight on a Prius, 3000 lbs, add a average size driver and passenger and its the same weight as a B body

IMHO the North American auto industry has simply ceased to build small cars & trucks anymore.  Look at the compact lines of cars & trucks 25 years ago . . . there isn't anything in the market like this anymore.  Those vehicles are just gone entirely.  The old compact model names are still there but everything has been resized upwards.

What used to be a choice of S/M/L cars, has now become a choice of just M/L.

We used to get trucks in S/L.  Now we get L/XL.

Small cars were originally intended for old-world cities with narrow streets. Weight was kept as light as possible to minimize material costs in manufacturing. Light weight also contributed to better fuel economy when that became an issue.
The reason that 'small' cars aren't 'small' anymore is simple-Americans are big people with big wide streets. Small isn't an attribute in demand. Material costs are not relevant if nobody buys your car.
Weight is another matter entirely. Cars used to be light for lots of reasons; Material costs, Performance, fuel economy, even shipping costs. The singular reason behind heavier 'small' cars, is Safety. Not only safety, but *Mandated* safety. Safer cars are marketed as such, successfully, but by and large people would buy less safe cars if they could save a nickel in the showroom.

Blame your insurance carriers and their servants (your elected officials) for the elimination of personal choices there.

That is one beautiful car you have there!

If you had stuck around long enough, the hippie driving the Prius probably would have scolded you for "destroying the environment" with your "gas guzzler."

I do understand the chain of events that's behind the shift.  I just think it's stupid past a certain point.

The across-the-board increase in vehicle size negates much of the safety benefit of it.  The performance of these vehicles is hurt in almost every way.  The price goes up as the factories struggle (and fail) to keep them lightweight enough.  The mileage is still not good for all that work.

If new cars are so much bigger, why can't I fit in any of them? I can sit comfortably in the Challenger, the Commander and the Patriot. Everything else in Chrysler's line-up is a no-go.
