I was searching on Craigslist tonight for Mopar parts and for some reason, this ad popped up.

WoW account 4 sale! 6 geared 80's, tier 9/10, 25k gold - $1000 (PoCo/Lower Mainland)

http://vancouver.en.craigslist.ca/van/vgm/1619274841.html

This guy is selling his 'World of Warcraft' account. You pretty much pick up where he left off and you pay for the time he "invested" in making the account so good. I just don't get it, who in their right mind would pay $1000 for a computer game account. What I find even more odd is this guy expects to get $1000 for the time he spent sitting on his ass playing the game. It makes no sense to me :shruggy:

I've heard that the Taiwanese are really big into video games, and they will buy game accounts like that.

That stuff has been going on for years. I remember people getting hard to find weapons, large amounts of money,
stuff like that, then selling it to other gamers. A lot of the game companies took steps to try and prevent that
sort of thing.

Hell, old news. People have been doing this for 5 years or more now. There were/are supposedly whole "shops" with people cranking out mid or high level accounts and then peddling them on ebay and similar sites....
There is a game where you can convert in-game cash to actual real world dollars, google project entropia for a real eye opener.
IMHO about as abstract as the stock market, where's the issue? Obviously people can pay fantasy prices for poorly built GL clones, why not for a game account?  :shruggy:
Some people build cars, others play computer games. I do both, but taking it to that level doesn't feel reasonable any more...

My son and I and a bunch of his friends used to play Everquest a lot. One friend of his sold a level 60 cleric account for $650 back in probably 2001.

There's big money in it. There is also good money in playing these games and saving up and selling the ingame money for real money.

I remember playing an online game called PUNCHME a couple of years ago... It was in the UK, but got tons of attention over here.. It was 100% text driven, and was basically a "who ever is strongest wins" type of game.

It was addicting.. When I left the game, I sold my account for $500  :o I remember thinking how funny it was that people were paying REAL $$ for nothing..

While I agree its silly............

Some games take hundreds even thousands of hours to make a great character.

So unless you have a LOT of time on your hands its more logical just to buy it.

I made a call once where a guy wanted to report a collectible hat was stolen.  I was curious thinking it might have been a sports related hat or something and started asking normal questions.  I then asked what kind of hat and he told me some crazy name, like Orc Thunder Killer Hat of the Gods or something like that.  I then questioned him further and found it to be a WoW hat that he had worked hours on getting in the game.  He sold it for $500.00 to a guy, that refused to now pay him his real money for the in-game hat.  That was in 2004, and I pretty much told him he was on his own, no prosecutor would take such a case, he didnt even know the guys real name he sold it to.  They guy was like late 40's still living with his parents and all he did was play WoW and Everquest trying to sell his goods.  I dont know if he ever got his moeny, but I know I didnt do a report on it.

Have you guys seen the "Leeroy Jenkins" video on youtube?  It is hands down the funniest WoW video out there that I've seen!  Check it out and let me know what you think.  Just search Leeroy Jenkins original on youtube and you'll find it!  Hilarious how serious they get and Leeroy cracks me up as well.

Agreed. I play a game called runescape from time to time. I have learned alot of ways to "cheat" just because thats thee kind of stuff that I am into. I have recently learned how to "script" stuff. So I have scripted several "bots" into the game and "the bot"

Sadly (or fortunately, depending on your amount of participation in WoW), it's fake. But given how some people think of terms like "teamplay" or "good of the group" in online gaming, not too far from reality :-)

Agreed. I play a game called "runescape" and I make scripts that do stuff on the game without you being there. They are called bots. I have sold the "scripts" called "bots" SEVERAL times. Sometimes for $5 and sometimes I get lucky and make a really good one that I sell for $50. It's all about what people are willing to spend their 2 cents on.

Oh jeez, Ponch is a Farmville geek? The last bit of respect I had for you just went down the crapper.

Oh, and at $1,000 this other geek is probably only clearing $.50/hour for all the time he's wasted.

lol...actually I played it for about a month, and then a couple of months ago out of nowhere I decided I was bored with it and I stopped playing it. Didn't even miss it.
