I am putting together a 440 street car. The rear gears are 3.55 and the compression will be 9.5:1
I am going with 1 7/8 headers.
I would like to get a hughes or engle cam.

HEH 2328 BL: INT .506"EXH .524 223 ° 228 ° 111 ° Lobe sep
or
HEH 2832 BL INT .524" EXH .540"  228 °232 ° 110 °  Lobe sep

Will the later be a good streetable cam. What profile of rpm range am I going to get from that?
Alslo should this engine have a 750 or 850 carb?
thanks

I ordered an Engle K56/K58 cam on a 110 LSA for my 9.5 to 1 compression 440. I have a 4 speed and 3.54's so a K56 might be a little better with an automatic depending on the stall converter.

The powerband and idle are right where I wanted them.

For a streetcar with 3.55's the first cam would be my choice with a 750cfm carb. A 2500 stall would be just about right with this cam profile.

I would stay away from anything with the name Hughes on it.

Thanks Ron, that about settles it. Now does Engle grind the hughes cams? Should I just go for an Engle cam?
The 223/228 cam is the same one I have in my 383 and i am very happy with it.
Still don't know how to drive my car correctly though.
Just thought of a question that is always naggin me when I drive. How do I tell what the stall rpm is of the converter when driving. I know you explained how to find this out. Something like run the car at 40mph in second and jam on the gas to see where the rpm's rise?
Just a sidebar there, not too important. Don't know if I will ever make up the nerve to take it to NJ raceway but I am still interested in the performance.

Hi Heath,

The Engle k56/k58 on a 110lsa would be a good cam. Hughes doesn't warrenty their cams so take that for what it's worth. Engle has a great reputation and does stand behind their product. The Hughes grinds used to be ground by Engle but they're using a new company now. DFS Charger had one go flat on him and a bunch of other related machining issues with Hughes and wasn't very Happy with the work or outcome....pm him for the gorry details. Chryco has also had issues with hughes cams. I've never used one myself so i'm not speaking from personal experience....but i've heard enough to know i'm not interested in running one. I like Comp for solids and Engle for hydraulic. Crower also makes a couple of descent Hydraulic cams that work extremely well in mild 440 applications.

To determine converter flash, put the car in 3rd gear and creep along at 10mph.....then floor it while eyeing the tach. When the converter locks and the car takes off....you'll know the flash rpm of your converter.

Do you have the specs on those Engle cams? I tried downloading from the sight and they are too small to see, tried calling and they were busy.

About the converter flash... How do you keep the car in 3rd when the trasnmission throttle pressure rod is going to kick it back into 2nd?

My tranny's have manual valvebodies so keeping it in 3rd gear is no problem.  :icon_smile_big: Just disconnect the kickdown linkage while doing the flash stall test. Remember to reconnect the kd linkage immediately or you will burn up the trans.
