I saw pictures of a white Superbird with a 273 in it, in a barn. I recall that the small block replaced the 440 shortly after it was new, as the owner desired better fuel economy.

A fellow locally bought a Bird with a blown engine and put a 318 in it for a while.  We took a trip to Michigan and he laughed at us getting 17-18 mpg.

On the way to the 1978 Winged Warrior National meet, driving from Phoenix to LA (downhill) my hemi 'Bird with 3.54 and a 727, my brother and I got 16 MPG.  Of course, on the return trip, we barely got 10 MPG.
