Package tray and rear speakers - Opinions/pics needed

I'm in the process of (SLOWLY) putting the interior in my '74 and I'm not too sure exactly what to do about the package tray. I ended up installing 6x9 speakers underneath the factory locations and all seems well with that. Now I'm looking at package trays and all of them are a solid piece. It seems like that would muffle the sound pretty drastically. I'm really trying not to cut up a perfectly good package tray, plus I don't really want the speakers/grilles to be visible. Has anyone else on here tackled this before, if so, what did you do?

I'm considering making my own package tray and using acoustically transparent fabric to fashion my own grilles that sit flush with the panel, but I figured I would ask here first.

I'm a 2nd gen guy but I would think there should be some perforations shaped like an oval on your package tray. If there isn't check some other sources for a tray that has speaker knockouts. Your idea of fabricating one may be the best bet. If it were me I'd remove the speakers, set the tray in place and use the factory holes to scribe the underside of the tray. Cut the holes out and cover with some good quality stretchy speaker cloth. Let us all know how it turns out which ever way you go. Good luck.

Why hide the speakers? Personal preference, or do you think somebody will break in for them? I'm using 6x9s in the back too, but I'll put plain grilles on them instead of the high-end brand name ones.

It's just a personal personal preference. To me it looks cleaner for whatever reason.

People pay a lot of money for mint, original, un-cut package trays. Don't cut it up if you can help it. The repro market has nothing for 3rd gen?

there are package trays made by REM with slots for speakers. They were also in that way from factory

Well, I decided to make an attempt to build a package tray with speaker grilles flush mounted. Here are the pics from my attempt. I'm not sure whether I'll try and build another one or not. This one turned out better than I expected. Best of all it took about 2 hours and cost about $10.00.

It's  speaker grille fabric. My local hobby store (Hobby Lobby) has two or three variations of it available. It's quite inexpensive.

I think I agree with you, Nacho. I'm not sure I like it after looking at it for a while. I think I'm going to try and do another. This time I'm definitely not going to cover it in vinyl. I think that's what makes me not like it.

yeah, that could be a reason... I think you got a good general idea, but needs a little bit more to make it look GREAT.

I have some ideas around... maybe tray flat painted ( thick to make it look with some grain ) and a SMALL frame with the fabric over the tray ? ( something like some old fashion High End speakers ). Needs more job BUT will look good and unique!

I like the stock look anyway, but giving more ideas to custom jobs
